Do you guys think schools interview too many students? Also, how are we supposed to know how many were interviewed at each school? Is there a website, can you guys post some links for some different schools or not. I know I feel that schools may be interviewing too many and they are just trying too hard to waste our airplane tickets, app fees and time. How are we supposed to decide to reject an interview or not.

The reason I'm asking is because I am not the richest of people and I dont have the time or money to chase a possible seat in a dental school if the dental school is only slightly interested in me, but goes ahead and interviews me just to make sure.

Do you want to be a dentist? If not, don't go to interviews then! People are going to say that the investment you put in now is nothing compared to the gains you will recieve once you're accepted and graduated from dental school.

Nice Hockeydentist. You seem like a real sweetheart. Great advice. Anybody have the real answer to remaly1312's question? I'd be interested to know this also.

Hockeydentist's answer IS the real answer. Do you want to be a dentist or not?

If you get an interview, then go. If you don't like the school, then don't go (although you shouldn't have applied to that school then, but that's another story).

Some schools interview a lot of applicants, some interview a few. Some grant acceptances to a lot, some only grant a few in order to fill the class.

Schools interview students to make decisions as to who to accept. There isn't any way around it. Some schools may be more proficient at it, but you can't venture a guess as to which interviews to decline and which to accept. Obviously, declining them means you will never matriculate there. Accepting the interview means you have a shot.

Exactly. Can't hit the ball unless you swing, right? I understand your financial problems, but borrow money....ask your relatives, friends, anything. Get it and go. Life is a road with series of walls blocking your path. Just bulldoze your way through.

What answer would you like to hear??

How about X school usually interviews X amount of applicants and accepts X amount? I highly doubt there are many people on this site that do not want to be dentists. I think it goes without saying that if you interview at numerous schools your chances for acceptance are increased. If you don't have a real answer then just say you don't, or don't post. Stating the obvious makes you appear as uninformed as the person asking the question.

I am no longer going to waste my time on this. To the original OP, do you even have any interviews? If you do thats great, if you got lots to speak of as of right now, I would think you could pick and choose where you want to spend your money. Outstate, especially private schools, I.E boston, nyu, temple interview a lot of students. where as schools like Harvard interview very few. good luck!

I got a brochure from case and they interviewed 350 for the incoming class of 2004 they have 70 seats so you have a 1 in 5 chance of getting in if you get interviewed. They may interview more/less people nowadays though.

Thanks for the reply tiny2533 and the rest of you. I was looking for more things like what tiny2533 said but its okay.

AND YES, I do want to go to dental school. But what I was really trying to get at is what if dental schools interviewed everyone that applied. How would you know they actually narrowed you down? Would you go seeing that you have a 1/25 chance or less of getting in. How are we supposed to know we are "chosen" from a large group and not randomly picked. These kinds of questions, but I appreciate everyones responses.

Thanks, Gluck

Don't forget to include that Case, like any other privite school, accepts more than the seats it has available because they know that some people may decline acceptance. Interesting question though. I'm particularly interested in UF, Nova, & UOP. I remember hearing that a lot of people from Florida get interview invites to UF to fulfill some mandate required by the state. I don't know if this is true, but I remember a lot of my friends from last year got interview invites to UF, without an acceptance. I think everyone I know that got an interview at Nova was accepted.

Schools accept more than their class size because no school with retain everyone it accepts.

Some advice for school interviews:
"You go to ALL of them until you have an acceptance in hand".

You have more than a 1 in 5 chance of getting in if you get an interview, to use Case as an example. This is because ALL, I repeat, ALL schools accept more students than the number of seats available. Didn't we go through this exact same thing when applying to undergrad?

If you're really worried about interview costs, apply to Creighton, as they don't have interviews.

I dont agree with the last statement.

You go to ALL of them until your money runs out!"

While I agree with this statement in part, I'd like to stress that going to every interview isn't required and it is alright if you turn down a few schools if you find yourself with several good interviews under your belt. Interviews are necessary at most dental schools to get accepted and they are usually costly. My advice is that an applicant should go to as many as they can afford.
