What does it take to start a small nonprofit organization?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Have you been wanting to start A non-profit (any old non-profit which would just happen to be an outstanding EC), or is there a particular issue that you care deeply about for which there are no services in your community?

I feel like there are no services in my community specifically dealing with this issue.

I just did it. We started the Choctaw Scleroderma Foundation. It takes money a lawyer to write up the bylaws and a lot of leg work and aksing peopel to help.

It is doable though. pM me.

yeah...you need a source of funds (sponsors, etc...). You need a drawn out plan...with a set budget, an executive board, etc...

Its a serious amount of work, have you concidered approching another non profit, one who maybe deals with the issue you have in mind, just in other communities? It may be easier to start a local branch than your own non-profit. it would likely be more effective as well if you can tap into a pre-existing network of resources and knowledge.

Cheers
