Many people talk about the importance of networking for students aiming to pursue competitive specialties/specialties at competitive programs, but I feel like "networking" is a very vague term. Personally, the way I've "networked" with mentors since starting medical school is through exchanging contact information and social media handles and occasionally sending them questions I have about their specific field of practice. For mentors that I am closer to and regularly interact with in person, I make conversation with them when we run into each other and I will send them hand-written thank you cards when they write LORs for me. Once in a while, I'll feel the waters to see if I can help on a research project. For connections that I meet at conferences/don't see in person, however, I don't really know how to stay genuinely connected with them beyond our first interaction. I'm curious to know how other people stay connected with people you've networked with (both people you rarely see and people you see often).
