Just considering the worst-case scenario here. What would the Army do with someone who got behind (not because of class failures or anything) and ended up not receiving their degree in time to match/scramble into military or civilian? you basically have a degree but can't do anything until next cycle.

Anyone have a clue? What could one do in the civilian world, assuming the Army would place this person on ALOA until the next match?

How would you get behind if it wasn't for academic problems?

I took my boards and have yet to get my score. If I failed, I have to sit out from rotations until I pass. I guess that could be "academic", despite not actually failing any courses or rotations. Just wondering what happens.

Yes, that would be academic.

It will depend on how far behind it will put you. If you are only delayed by a few months, they will likely allow you to participate in the match and start late.

What would be, "too far behind", and what would happen then? I'm really just curious and finding ways to assuage my anxiety.

Nothing like the good old days of catastrophic test taking anxiety 🙁

Well, honestly I'm not as worried about failing/having to retake as I am the potential consequences. As long as a failure doesn't guarantee that I absolutely end up a GMO regardless of what I apply to, I won't be that worried about it.

I figure if that's not an issue, then the worst thing to happen is that I'll never be a surgeon, which is probably ok I guess. Even though I really liked surgeon, I'm way too lazy to be a good one.

IM and psych aren't THAT bad

If you really want a residency, do an elective rotation at the program you want to match with. Demonstrate to them that you have the knowledge, maturity and motivation for the position.

If it is more than 6 months, they will likely move you to the next intern start year.
