I got this email a couple days ago....
Anybody else??

Dear Prospective Student:

Our records indicate that you have begun the application process for admission to the Duke University School of Medicine. We are delighted that you are considering Duke.

I will be visiting Los Angeles to attend the Graduate and Professional School Fair on Friday, October 8, 2004. As you are probably aware, the fair will be held from 10:00AM - 2:00PM at the Ackerman Ballroom. These venues generally give us an opportunity to talk about Duke, our application process, and give you an opportunity to ask specific questions regarding the Duke experience and life in Durham, NC.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend a personal invitation to you to visit my table if you are planning to attend the event. If the event is not on your agenda for that day, please feel free to maintain an email dialogue with me particularly as you complete the application process for admission to Duke.

If I can be of any further assistance, please don't hesitate to call.

Regards,

Richard S. Wallace
Assistant Director of Admissions
Duke University School of Medicine
Rm 0159 Duke South

I'm going to go ahead and say that the letter is pretty self explainatory!!!

wow... mysterious letter! i will see if i can translate it for you...

i think the letter means that they are aware of your interest and that they will be in town at ucla and are inviting you to visit them at their table so that you can meet them and learn more about duke.

seriously, good luck!

That's kind of a random letter....not an invite, but a personal conIsideration at least....I'd definitely go check it out!

I got that exact same email. I plan to talk to my premed advisor and see how legit it is.

I bet it means you guys will get in, congratz.

Can nobody on this thread do or interpret anything on their own? I swear, you people want to be doctors and make decisions about people's lives but you can't even interpret one highly candid letter. It means that they are gogin to be pitching their med school at a career fare, that they saw that you live in teh area and had applied, and thus you should go listen to why their school is good/ just meet their representative. This is no different from regular college fairs, and doesn't mean you will/will not get in if you don't go. Obviously, it would be to your benefit to meet with him, let him know of your interest, and chat it up. Does anyone on this board have common sense? Who asks their premed advisor about a letter that is so obvious, jeez, how did ya'll make it through 4 years of college?

kind of what i was thinking as i read this thread.....
the email doesn't mean that you are any better off in the admissions process than other people who maybe didn't get the email - it just means that the school will have some representatives in your area anyways, and thought you might like to come talk to them since you've shown interest by applying. thats all! whether you go or not won't impact your application.

i hear ya. does everyone have to read into every single little action that a medical school makes? so i guess its true some docs have no common sense...if only duke could see this thread.......

Some of the responses were sarcastic, though. 👍

HAHA, some of you people are just mean :meanie:

But yeah, a pretty self-explanatory letter if I ever saw one.

*sigh* I should have phrased my question as: Is Duke exclusively sending it to select people at ucla or is it just duke wanting everyone at ucla to discover interest in the school? I can read and I know what the letter says; i'm not stupid!...i hate when people are so negative in this thread. This thread may seem a bit neurotic, but my impression is that if you post threads on student doctor that you are at least a tiny bit neurotic during this whole process.

Take your interactions with Richard seriously! Consider that whatever you say or do around Richard will mean A LOT as you apply to Duke!!! I would consider him the #2 person behind Dr. Armstrong in the decisions made at Duke about their medical school entering class. Take this as an opportunity to hear about Duke from someone who is passionate about the PEOPLE that attend Duke and not just freakishly high numbers. Consider it an interview before your interview (he interviewed me at Duke and I would say that his input to the rest of the committee made the difference in their decision).
I just wanted to stress that Richard is not some average Joe from Duke pitching the school. I am sure that he IS pitching the school, but I am also sure that he has more that a short term memory and will remember you! SO, I would suggest 1. make an effort to show your interest by attending whatever function this is and 2. make a good impression! BUT be yourself because I think he is a good judge of character and can see through a lot of BS. By the way, Richard is an awesome guy and very interested in you as a person and what you can contribute to society when you graduate from Duke Medical School!
Don't forget to have fun in this process and good luck wherever you end up!

by the way......there are students who still come to this site when we are getting tired of studying
and SOME of these students are friends with the committee members of their med schools
and SOME the THESE students DO talk about what they read on here
I am not one of them......BUT I am sure there are people out there and they are not spying...just probably talking to key people in everyday conversations about what they read about their school on the web!

Obviously the OP should go to the fair and act professional. This is simply a given. If you want to be at Duke, you take every advantage you can to get your name known, act as if you are interviewing, and don't burn your bridges. Yes, even people on here have power at certain schools. The point is some people can't infer anything on their own. This isn't just being negative. It is common sense that if you want to be somewhere, you make your presence known there whenever you can and meet whoever you can to impress on their memory who you are.

Kinda makes ya wonder why people link their mdapplicants data from the SDN posts. I almost did, but then realized that there are aspects about my app that could probably single me out quite well.

Your comments are extremely rude and completely unnecessary. I have been receiving a good amount of junk mail lately and some of the senders have been pretending to be med school reps. Why do you find it necessary to be so rude, especially since I haven't been rude to you? 😡

Are you serious? You mean people are pretending to be med schools and saying you have an interview or something when it's really not true 😕 ?

I got the exact same email except it told me that reps would be in the ithaca, ny area. It depends on where you went to college, which is strange because many applicants no longer live around their undergrad campus.
