Today I received a letter from SUNY Downstate which I initially though was a rejection letter. However, the letter stated that ? The committee reviewed your application and decided to place your application in the ?Hold? category. This means that your credentials will be reviewed again in the Spring.? Now What I would like to know is the following.

A)Is this a good or bad sign?
B)Is there a good chance I will get invited for an interview later on?
C)Is this just a delayed rejection. That I will eventually get rejected anyway?
D)Is there a large pool of applicants placed in the ?Hold? category?
E)Is this a waitlist?

Thank you for your feedback.

It just depends on the school. It isn't a waitlist if you haven't been interviewed. Basically, the school wants to see how you stack up to the entire applicant pool before they offer you an interview.

If you want to increase your chances, it wouldn't hurt to send update letters/interest letters every so often. Let them know you are seriously interested in attending the school

I got the "Hold" letter after my interview last year. It's good because you havent't been rejected! However, the possibility still exists, BUT so does the possibility for acceptance or the Alternate List! Don't assume you'll be rejected! They're just going to make you agonize awhile longer. I think the update/continued interest letters are a great idea, and see if you can get on a first name basis with someone in the admissions office. The lady who puts the files together at our school has been there forever and has WAY more influence than most applicants would think! Be REAL nice to these people. BTW, I did get in after going through the "Hold" then Alternate List process, so stay positive! Good luck!
