this probably sounds like a stupid question, but i just have to make sure! but for one of my schools that i already interviewed at, my status is "Alternate List" .. that's the same as wait list, right? i've just never heard anyone use this term before..

Congrats! advise: keep up and stay in touch with that school, early and consistant bird gets the seat. I would even send a thank you post card to the ADMIN committe specificaly to the director of admissions.

GWU calls it an "Alternate List". Sometimes schools call it the "Competitive applicant pool". They're very similar to waitlists, if not exactly the same. For example, a "pool" might be less strictly structed, and more prone to be influenced by appeals, updates, etc.

gotcha, thanks guys!

Can someone confirm this? I was waitlisted in December and have just been sitting back and waiting, not contacting the school at all. I figure nothing will matter or happen until Spring at least. Will constant contact actually be beneficial?

It depends on the school somewhat (for example, I know that your waitlist ranking at VCU is locked in from the day you're put on the list), but it seems like most schools look upon it positively, or at least not negatively.
