As an OOS applicant to Texas, how high of a GPA do they expect you to have? I have a TMDSAS cGPA of 3.8 and sGPA of 3.7 which I understand is pretty low.

However, if my MCAT is very good (like 95%), and my EC's are good, and I apply early do I still have a decent chance as OOS to Texas ? Or will my GPA bring me down?

I just want to know whether I should still apply TMDSAS with my GPA. I do have a lot of family in TX and am working in the state during my gap year, so I would absolutely love to move there for med school!

That GPA is just fine. I applied as OOS with a *much* lower GPA and ended up with five interviews to Texas schools. I think as an OOS student you need to have something special that you are adding to their class, but that could be GPA or MCAT or ECs or just unusual life experiences. Besides, the TMDSAS application is cheap, so go ahead and give it a shot! Don't discount the out-of-the-way schools when you apply. The Texas Tech schools in El Paso and Lubbock far exceeded my expectations when I visited them.

If you get to the interview stage you definitely should expect to be questioned repeatedly about your motives in applying to Texas. Family ties do help a bit, but you should be able to honestly say that you want to stay in the state to practice afterwards. Texas subsidizes medical education, so the state wants a good return on the investment. Good luck.
