Ok, so we are on the path as post-bac students, taking the courses we need in order to take the MCAT.

Everyone says you should volunteer or do research. Volunteering at the local hospital, check.

What else should we be doing? Are there certain books we should read? We should probably be doing those big fat practice MCAT exam books too right? Any good books for how to handle med-school interviews? How about some general good books geared towards pre-med students?

So far I've read two books by Atul Gawande, "Complications" and "Better", both great books which I recommend.

Any recommendations for which books to get?

Thanks!

Do research only if you like it, and/or if you want to do an MD/PhD. Research isn't for everyone, and as a researcher, both my PI and myself dislike students who just come in to just say they "did research". We love the ones that are excited to do research.🙂

Do what floats your boat. Being unique in a positive way is better than getting a little bit of everything that people recommend to you (e.g., research, clinical experience). I've seen way to many students with all that AND MORE...so its not really that special to have 10000 hours of shadowing a physician or volunteering in a hospital. I personally enjoy playing sports, so I joined up to play sports for my university. Maybe you like music, or art...etc...try any of those and more🙂. Good luck!
