and how does it differ from a hobbie?

Anything from the creation of your own symphony to finger painting. I just bought paint yesterday, splattered it on my roommate's door, and bam, now I'm an artist, and...I have an artistic endeavor in impressionistic paint splattering. 👍 I'm putting this on my AMCAS

To me, "artistic endeavours" are the subset of "hobbies" that are designed to provoke some sort of emotional reaction in a viewer. Painting, photography, music, dance, etc, etc, etc. You could read entire books that attempt to define what "art" is tho...so I doubt you're going to get a very good definition here on SDN.

I would think of a hobby as anything you do for fun outside of school and work and artistic endevours would be what Bluntman listed above (plus a few others like sculpture and film).

Something you're proud of. Or something you could earn money doing, REALISTICALLY. Like paintings you can REALISTICALLY sell. No offense to anyone here, but drawing stick figures does not count as an art endeavor.

Yeah, I would agree. I wouldn't put down anything unless you are at least a little accomplished (i.e. won an award, play in an established band/orchestra, etc.)

If it's displayed in an art show/exhibition or even just put up for display in a building, I would consider it an endeavor.

Money doesn't factor in at all. If it's a hobby and it's artistic, it's fair game to include. Hell, half the people who consider themselves professional artists don't make any money at it.

Realistically. I mean it's possible to earn money. I could theoretically earn money drawing Flash Art, but I do it for fun. Hard to describe, really. You know it when you do it.

To me, an "artistic endeavor" is a singular work, whereas a "hobby" is a interest in an artistic avenue developed and refined over a period of time.

For instance, if you've been "learning the guitar" for two weeks before applying to medical school, that's an artistic endeavor, not a hobby. If you've been playing guitar for two years before applying to medical school, then "playing guitar" is a hobby.

What about collecting stamps? Most people would consider that a hobby but not art.

Then designing the engagement ring I'm giving my girlfriend counts!

That's in addition to numerous songs I have written. Sweet.....even more stuff I can put on my app without having to be a typical premed

I don't think so. Learning to do something is not an artistic endeavor. Doing something that you know is a hobby, of course. Applying what you've learned into a product is. If you play a guitar, that's a hobby. However, if you perform at a concert, whether it be charity or for money, I believe that is an artistic endeavor. Else, me learning to play 50 instruments 2 weeks before applying to medical school, even if I suck at all of them, would be 50 artistic endeavors.

Amen, brother! Definitely more "art" in that than a lot of stuff out there on display. That's an amazing idea too..she's gonna flip when she sees it! 👍

Right. Although I'm sure one could argue that there is an art to collecting stamps...

My interpretation of the original question is what separates an artistic hobby from an artistic endeavor, but I'm the one who added the prefix to "hobby", so perhaps that is why it's confusing here.

I agree with the bolded point. I don't believe that "learning 50 instruments" 2 weeks before medical school counts as 50 artistic endeavors. That would be quite a stretch. I'm sure someone has put that on their application though and I hope med schools see right through it.

My point was that it all depends on what you really mean when you say you "play guitar". When you play guitar, are you simply learning chords for the sake of learning chords (not art), or are you learning chords to write your own music? Are you using the chords to interpret a piece of music and come up with your own tabs? Both of those latter efforts could be considered art.
