So I'm a new first year, and my question is this: as far as Step 1 goes, if it's not in FA, is it not really worth holding on to? Or, is the point to be able to hold on to all of those small details two years from now? I'm just trying to get a sense of what's reasonable and what information is kind of unnecessary to know after the block.

The point of learning in med school is not to retain everything. The goal is to learn it once, develop a general understanding, and if you need to know the details you know where to find it.

If it's not in FA, there's really no reason to remember it -- for most purposes. An attending advised me once, though, that as you develop an interest in certain things, to hold on to most of the minutiae because being an "expert" in something has a lot of value during rotations if you're trying to make a good impression for a particular specialty.
