Everyone says to take it as an elective and I want to, but my advisor told me it's the same as Bio 2010, which we call General Biology I at my school. My friend who's taking Cell Bio at another school says it's not the same. Here's the description of the class at my school:

The biological topics related to cells are studied in detail. These topics include molecular biology, genetics, cell types, cell structure and functions, embryology, histology, and evolution.

This particular advisor has been wrong about other things, so I want to double check. Is this the same as Cell Bio or is my friend right?

I took cell bio last year and while, obviously, different schools will teach different things...my class included this:

-Almost exclusively about eukaryotic cells
-Cell structure
-Organelle function
-Detailed study of metabolic function at the cell level
-Basic study of the related biochem
-Enzyme study
-Organic tissue types/functions (Structure/functon of proteins, lipids, carbs, etc.)

There was little to no: Embryology, evolution, or genetics

If you are unsure, go to your campus bookstore and look at the cell biology textbook that the class uses. Thats one way to know. Otherwise, go talk to the professor and get a copy of the syllabus.

Never trust your advisor... I highly doubt your cell bio class is the same as a general bio class, mine were definitely two seperate, though related, classes.

cell bio and general bio are different. Take cell bio. Don't listen to your advisor.

Cell Bio. is basically how cells work. Review of cell structure/related Biochem., Protein trafficking, vesicle transport, the cytoskeleton, cell cycle control, development and differentiation, were all topics covered in my Cell Bio. class. Your advisor sounds like he/she was smoking crack.

The text for my class was called Molecular Biology of the Cell, and, as I recall, the entire text was available for free online (sorry, don't remember the link offhand) so you can check it out.

cell bio is anything and everything about the cell and only the cell. you'll learn first about cell structure and then everything about what the cell does, primarily protein formation and transport.

This class sounds a little like some of the stuff you guys mentioned. It includes three biochemistry chapters. It's all about cells and only cells one of the other students told me. At my school, we have one class that's called Biology I. This is an intro to bio class for anyone to take. The class I'm talking about is called General Biology I for Science majors and it's called Cellular Processes. The advisor told me it's the same as Cell Bio offered at other schools. This other student said she didn't know if it was the same but that this class is all about cells and DNA. I don't know what to think.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys! I'll do some research online.

The two are not the same.

General Bio 1 and "Cellular Processes" will be your general intro bio course. You'll cover basic stuff that will be on the MCAT. The only way this would be similar to "Cell Bio" offered at other schools is if their Into Bio course was called something like "Introduction to Cell Biology and Physiology", as mine was, or something like that.

Plain old "Cell Biology", at any school I know of, is an advanced level, upper division biology course. You will learn all about the cell, as stated above. The level of detail here is much higher than intro bio, there is more material and it is in many respects much more difficult.

The difference between the two should be obvious by the number designation for the courses. Your school seems to use a different system, but at my school, where freshman/into courses are 100-level and Grad student classes are in the 500's, Intro Bio is like 150 and Cell Bio is 411.

its kind of like zoology.

Only instead of that it has nothing to do with animals.

Just about everything that has to do with a cell, properties, genetic processes, protein building. You name it, its got it.

At my school cell bio had compenets of genetics and biochemistry in addition to all the other stuff.

At my school there was alot of overlap between Bio II (Life Process was the title of the class) and Cell Biology. However, the key difference was the depth that the professor went into the class. In Bio II, which is a freshman level class, they didnt care you knew which enzyme does what or that Caspases are involved in Apoptosis... They only taugh that a cell can undergo Apoptosis and that is a 'clean' cell death event. Cell Bio was a sophmore level class and they did care about those details and were tested on those details. I really think you advisors correct in saying it covers the same material... but fails to tell you that its covered in MUCH more depth in cell bio. I will be beneficial to take both actually.

Good luck!
