What exactly is consult psych?C

Can anyone tell me what consultation psychiatry is?

It's similar to any other consult service in the hospital, in that the patient is not on the primary psychiatry inpatient service, but the primary team would like psychiatry's input on the patient. So the patient may be admitted to medicine, surgery, neurology, etc., but there either is a pre-existing psychiatric issue that the primary team would like some help managing, or a new psychiatric condition (such as signs of depression after a long hospital stay, etc). has arisen that the team would like the psych service to provide some guidance on.

Why would that be its own (sub)specialty? Why wouldn't any psychiatrist be able to consult on those cases?

There is a CL psychiatrist who posts a lot on the psych forum, I would head over to that forum and take a look. It sounds like they focus on mental illness in those who have severe medical illness, delirium, working with psychosomatic symptoms and "zebra hunting".

You use it when your patient has cluster B traits and youre sick of dealing with her bull****

There are also sub-subspecialty work, such as psycho-derm, psycho-oncology, etc. These are also more particular to psychosomatic specialists (AKA C/L).

You don't have to do a fellowship to do C/L work, as there's a great need out there. But some do, especially if they want to stay in academics.
