What expenses should I expect other than tuition and fees?

As the person said above, loupes are expensive so see if there's a loupes fee included in your costs. Also, ask upperclassmen if you'll need books or not. I saved about 1k because I didn't need to buy any books for my classes since they weren't needed. I recommend you take out a little bit more money than you need, like 1-2k. That way, if you need a little extra money you'll have it. If you decide you don't need it, you can pay it back as the interest accumulated on it will be minimal.

Class dues are another (def would vary between schools, but isn't too huge of an amount, but if you want to be accurate, there you go)
Typodont teeth.... (you will practice A LOT and you will almost always need more teeth than what they account for in your dental kit)
Burs (same as above - they die fast and diamond burs a lil pricey)
Books (if applicable)

You should also ask upperclassmen at these schools if there were any other unexpected charges. For us, we didn't know we'd have to pay for gold (like actual gold) for one of our classes until the quarter of, so that was a sad $400+ some people didn't budget for....

Looking ahead to your D3 and D4 year, have a couple grands in your budget for all sorts of boards/licensing exams. INBDE, NERB or WREB, they are all very pricey.

What loupe brand would you recommend?

This really depends. Don't listen to what anyone says - you go try them on during their visits (companies/reps visit schools) and buy the one that fits best for you.
Agree w/ Punt me. In addition, the school you attend may only allow you to buy loupes from certain companies (UCLA only lets us pick from 4 vendors - Orascoptic, Surgitel, Q-Optics and Designs for Vision). Nonetheless, you need to try different brands/styles out and find the one that fits you most comfortably and has the things you're looking for.

Agreed. I tried on every single vendor that came to see which I’d like best. Each person definitely has a different preference and comfort.
