I am geographically limited by my wife's job. I am not applying for residency for a while but we are trying to figure out things for the future. If I only apply for residency at local programs and do not match:

1. Does it make me less (non?) competative for the same residencies next year (i.e. no means no forever)?

2. What do you do during that year to make your application more competative the next year?

Thanks for your help,
bds

If you apply to local residencies only, you had better cover a couple of specialties. Otherwise you may be SOL come the next application season. Others opinions may differ.

Can you apply for more than one specialty? I thought that you had to choose one.

Technically you can, but most poeple who do dont tell each of the specialties they have applied to other fields. Programs may think your unsure of what you want or that your are using thier speaciality as a "back up".
