Currently applying radiology and I hope I will most likely match, however I didn't go to many prelim/transitional year interviews for financial reasons. What will my match day letter look like if i match only advanced position. I'm talking about the email on Monday. I just want to know whether it will say i matched or that i need to soap for a prelim/transitional year. Just asking because I don't want any surprises lol. Thank you.

It will tell you that you matched to an Advanced program, but not a prelim, and you'll be able to SOAP for prelim. YOu will also be able to contact the NRMP and find out what city to matched to for Advanced, if that will help you with your search for a prelim.

Are the chances pretty high to SOAP into a prelim program? What if that doesn't happen? You're screwed for your advanced position?

One of my classmates had that issue last year and he told me it was extremely stressful. He was able to find a TY position in the SOAP.

Chances are decent to SOAP for a prelim if you already have an advanced spot. Might be stuck doing surgery though if you can't get medicine or a TY.

In 2018, there were in the SOAP:

99 Medicine Prelims (up from 67 the previous year)
10 Ob/gyn Prelims
5 Pediatric Prelims
65 TYs
462 Surgery Prelims

I agree that the OP has been answered pretty satisfactorily - (s)he will, if worst comes to worst, simply do an undesirable surgery prelim. With that said...

These surgical prelims - are they all filled in the SOAP?

If not, what does that mean for those programs? Do they not really require resident labor?

Are matched residents' workloads dependent on how many co-residents they have, or are their call schedule/patient load expectations protected?

Is the high rate of vacancies suggestive that our friends in Gen Surg have some work to do to improve med students' interest in the field?

Ob/Gyn Prelim!

Did not know about that?
Usually only applied to by people that are weaker candidates for ob gyn and worry they may fail to match the first time. They rank it below the categorical Ob programs. If you do well, you might have a bit of a leg up the second time, the program may just decide to make an extra pgy2 spot for you, or you may be able to find a pgy2 spot somewhere due to someone quitting a different program.

I can't imagine anyone does an ob gyn prelim on purpose and then goes on to an advanced residency in a different field. I can just imagine most of the radiologists I know considering it...

Yeah, but isn't there thousands and thousands of people that enter the SOAP?
