So after we get our results on Friday morning, what happens next? Do we just show up next July? Should we call the program we match with, do they call us? Are there contracts to sign? Just wandering what to expect after the big day....

INEBRIATION?

Iowa called the people who matched to congratulate them, but I'm not sure if this is customary at all programs. You'll sign a contract. Some programs will give you a bonus....
of doing an internship. Finally, you'll show up next July and feel like a first year medical student again.

As my program director stated: "You go from saving lives to being unable to prescribe a pair of glasses".

My program called us the day of the match. My contract came during intership year.

How closely do you keep in touch with your program during internship year? I know many programs send the Basic Science Series during this time as a hint to what you should be doing. Dr. Doan, did you find yourself reading for ophthalmology at all during your intern year?

Hmmm.. sure.... A little? Not much truthfully, I was busy as an internal medicine intern and barely had enough time to learn about DKA management and MIs. I read the book introducing residents to the exam. You'll find the link in the FAQ.

Don't worry about it. 🙂 You'll have plenty of time to read later.

Most people don't keep in touch with their programs. I did b/c I did the internship at Iowa. I also traded my month of renal consults to do one month of ophtho at the IC VAMC, so I kept in the touch with my program more than most.
