Does anybody know what adcoms do during winter break?

I'm worried that one of my schools will send me something over break to my college box, then cancel my application or something for not responding quickly enough (I'll be gone about a month).

Has anyone called or emailed the adcoms about this? Any advice?

Thanks!

Adcoms do what everyone else does...go home, see family, catch up on DVD watching...

They will probably go on holiday beginning right before the 24th and come back right around Jan 4th. If you'll be gone after that time, you might want a reliable person to check your mail for you.

i was worried about the same thing, leaving for a month, and people told me not to get my mail forwarded for two reasons - one, the mail is unreliable enough and having to route it could just increase the chance of something getting lost. and two, my roommate's mail would be going to my home too, so yeah.

my post-doc from lab is gonna check my mail for me and let me know if anything arrives, as every student i know is getting the hell outta town over winter break.

they take the same break as most everyone else does. sometimes committees meet one last time before the holidays and may send out early acceptances or rejections, but that is really variable by school. your best bet is to enjoy your break...if you are away for any extended time, just have someone check your mail periodically.

I used to work in the registrar's office of CU, right next door to the admissions office. Now, the admissions office was for the undergrad school, but they worked regular days. Days off for Christmas Eve, Christmas, and New Year's.

Of course, adcoms are different. Lots of profs, docs, and whatnot that will probably be taking vacations. So, I bet they have their regular bimonthly or monthly meeting right before Xmas and then back to the regular grind afterwards. And then the admissions staff will continue working almost like they always do.

I for one will continue to obsessively check email, though I will be gone for a week and won't be able to check snail mail. But once I'm back, I'm gonna be checkin'!

y'all are a paranoid bunch. in case some of you are wondering, adcoms are made up of people, i promise.

um....i don't know, i consider it being smart. if you know you're going to be gone from Dec.15th-Jan15th and 2 schools told you they'd mail you with a decision near the end of December, and you have 2 weeks to respond, it's only smart to get your mail checked....of course, you could disagree

if a school does not accept the excuse that you were gone for break and did not have access to your mail, you tell me and i'll talk to them. i got your back, kid!
