I feel as though most of us have given up something in our life to get at this point in our life. What is it for??

I gave up my old band, playing music, hunting, and countless hours with friends and family.

How about you??

I've given up my original goal of getting a md

I gave up the prospect of owning a dog after graduation from undergrad.🙁

I have given up a fat paycheck, free time, and golf. I have also given up the purchase of a house for now, which is a good thing, since prices keep falling.

Predent life isn't actually hard...

How are falling home prices a bad thing for a buyer? Now is the time to buy.

Because if they keep going down, you can buy it even cheaper. He's saying he's glad he didn't buy a house because the housing market is tanking.

I gave up getting a PhD in Microbiology and being a miserable lab rat for the rest of my life.

That's crazy. Enough said.

my girlfriend 🙁

there's other girls... girls interested in dentistry... 👍

is that really giving something up? 🙂

It's not bad for buyers, just me as a buyer, because I can't buy now that I am entering d-school. If I hadn't decided to become a dentist, me and the wife would be shopping for a house right now, with >20% down in hand. But prices are likely to drop some more, so it may be a good thing that we have to wait. The only problem is that I will come out of d-school with a mortgage payment, but no house.

Like he said.

I've given up fast money (part-time jobs), a better social life (going out more often), time spent with my boyfriend. Pretty much, I've given up a ton of time to studying and preparing for dental school. If I were going into another field I would not have put in so much effort. But I would feel guilty if I did not put in all the effort I could when entering/attending dental school because my hopeful career deals with the health of other people. That's just the way it is.

a military career. Leaving as an E-5 to join the ranks of my fellow pre-dents.

Time with my children 🙁 husband, family.....
My dream house and hurricanes
Moved from South Florida to the cold West
Sleep
My sanity
My 30's
Community Service
Time with friends
Regular Manicure/Pedicure, hair cuts
Talking to my sisters for hrs on the phone

And I wouldn't change my pre-dental life for anything else!😍

-chance for extra cash (partime job)
-time with good friends.
-vacations
-superficial friends. i guess the good thing is that i was able to weed out a lot of the friends who weren't so supportive. you find out who cares about you when you're stressed out and going through hard times.
-a potential romantic love interest. i didn't want any distractions or drama.

computer games - should've been done with those in undergrad anyways...
watching TV

I would not give up love and friends for anything, even dental school.

exactly the same for me. also my numerous extracurricular activities also takes up a lot of my time (although I enjoy them all). 🙂

2 years of my life doing post bach, a great paying job, 3 years long distance relationship with my girlfriend, watching all my buddys get rich and get their MBAs, and potentially all for nothing...

but if some adcom can see that dedication and let me in it will be all worth it...

Spring break someplace warm!!!

Instead, I'll be spending my break in South Dakota, taking my DAT!

WHOO!

Not going out nearly half as much as my high school buddies did while attending one of the top party schools in the country.

a decent social life..haha a boyfriend who is in the army now...too many things happening at once.

You clearly don't understand the rank structure in the military...
By the way, they'd be an O-3 by the time they're out of dental school!

E-5 to O-1? That would be a huge demotion if you ask me

I quit my job in IT ($60,000+/year) to come back to school with the idea of going to dental school.

any hope of having a life in the next 4 years...

agreed
Wouldn't it most likely be better to be an office than a petty officer?

As a matter of fact, I do understand the rank structure in the military. Sure, all enlisted have to take crap from even an O-1 but still, I'd much rather be a gunnery sgt or first sgt than a liutenant or captain.

I'm in the difficult process of quitting dipping tobacco for Dentistry... I wanna be a Dentist, but I have this terrible habit from high school that I'm having trouble quitting.

So far, lots and lots of time studying for those undergrad science dental school pre-reqs, will be giving up most of the summer to physics as well. And being employed full time as well, that extra time eaten up by the pre-reqs means less sleep, exercise, time eating out, time with significant other, and general fun (like video games, movies, etc).

But it'll all be worth it! I hope... ;D

Eldirty, I feel you. I left mine in the pharma industry (60k/year), and my dream car, to come back with the same intentions (doing my masters to improve ug record). I'm not in yet. Hopefully next year at this time I'll feel better about my decision.

My senior season in D1 athletics.

Ya I gave that up too. I might just wait until the second year to see if I will be able to make time.

my life! lol
modeling... leaving SF where i have lived for 12 yrs.. ahh it will b ok, right? 😀 Its totally worth it.

i gave up working on my car 🙁 DAT study materials are expensiveeee

I'll be doing the same... you're making the right choice though. I don't know which pharma company you're at, but over here, it's virtually impossible to "climb the ladder" even with a PhD since there needs to be a justifiable "business need" for you to advance. It's basically promotion by attrition, and even then, there's a lot of corporate political BS that goes on behind the scenes. Duration of service is no longer a criteria for promotion like it used to be.

Every single one of my managers/supervisors has told me that I'm making the right decision... I know you're still waiting on acceptance(s), but don't give up!

I gave up using the right hemisphere of my brain. Histology was almost like an art class for me! Other than that, social life and free time (which includes time to do dishes, laundry, cleaning, etc. -- basically, anything other than studying).
