I realize that most states, including New York, ask that you change your auto registration and license over to them in 30 to 60 days once you become a resident. Has anyone doing residency in New York kept their home state's license and registration? I called the New York DMV and got a thick stack of forms that have to be completed. I intend on living in hospital provided housing and will not move into my permenant residence until I start residency or a few days after I start (I will be put up in a temporary place). Since I will not have a permanent address before starting and will not have time (or be able to take time off) to personally go into a DMV office to submit the forms and take their eye exam once I start residency this looks like a problem. You also need to change over your insurance to New York first and they will also want a permanent address. I would not mind changing things if it did not seem to be such a problem. I called my insurance and they said that I could keep my car insurance for Pennsylvania even if I am living in New York as long as the car is 'garaged more than 50 % of the time in Pennsylvania'.
When it is in New York my car will probably be parked or stored in the guarded hospital parking lot and not on the street. Since I will be able to walk the hospital I probably will not be driving very much. So is it really necessary to change things over for the car? If I pay taxes as a New York resident would that be a problem? The only thing is that I would have to have it inspected back in Pennsylvania every year.
