What if I wanted to work only one day a week?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Possible, but it probably won't be desirable.

In my group, we could offer you one day a week......Saturday 0700 until Sunday 0700

and your pay: you get what you can collect....nothing else

Is it possible to get a job working only 1 day a week? Does locum tenens allow you to do that?

The real question is, why bother collecting the 52 days of pay? We're talking less than 2 months pay.

Why not just collect welfare and call it a year?

It would be easier to arrange one week per month. Or work the last week and the first week of ever other month.

If you have ever filled out a hospital privileges application you would see that they are very concerned about any time when you did not work. If that was not the case I would suggest working for two months then taking the rest of the year off.

So working at least once per month would be best and not taking more than one month off at a time.

If you worked 10 week per year at $1200 per day or $6000 per week you would make $60000 per year, which is still more than median income of most families in this country.

This new economic "stimulus package" only pays money to singles who make less than 75000 per year, if you make more than that you are considered rich and will not get a $300 dollar check.

Only out of curiosity. What is considered typical "part-time" for Gasworks? How often do you see it?

Do locums for a month or 2 and take the rest of the year off. I would love to do that if I wasn't buried in debt.

One day a week is not enough to keep your skills up. If you are coming out of residency, then you need a few more years to get up to speed with most seasoned anesthesiologists. In your case, you would never get there.

But if you are already seasoned, then I'm with Mil "again". You can work for my group, SATURDAYS.

thread hijack:

When people refer to "seasoned", are they talking about seasoning as in salt and pepper, or "seasoned" as in many seasons have come and gone?

As soon as I poured cayenne peppa all over myself, they sayz I waz seasoned. I dun gradyated 2 years early.

Skill maintenance or development is one thing as Noy pointed out.
BEing desirable to an employer is another.
That said, I dont think we need to be judgmental about how much someone works. I think nearly every anesthesiologist in the country would be considered a slacker by the majority of general, ortho and neuro surgeons I have seen. Would you want them to devalue how hard you work?

I would love to only work a few days a week. Some of us love medicine but love other things as much or more.

There are some places out there where you can work per diem (ie get paid per day). I know here in the Seattle area the University Hospitals will let you do that... one day at a time. i think the pay is either $1000 or $1200 and they cover your malpractice. It's not a terrible gig- you are always out of there by either 1530 or 1600. And you can set the days you work. That is if you wanted to work only one day a week..

i am on staff at 3 hospitals in the so cal area and am consulted. I am not promised any cases at any of the hospitals. I am not employed by anyone. Nobody pays anything for me except i do get a little something something when i take call in addition to my billings. I dont respond to codes intubations or central line needs.
