I have a friend who just graduated and said he is doing an extern at some medical center. I've never heard of this... I thought an extern was something MD's do during their rotation years and not for undergrads... does anyone know of what an extern is?

Thanks

At the Children's Hosptial of Philadelphia, externs are the exact same thing as Sub-Interns (e.g. MS4's taking on the role of an intern).

at my college, an extern is someone who is shadowing someone else....so when you shadow a doctor for a week, it's called doing an externship.

hey- i'm at CHOP, too....though i'm just a research assistant.
