I know this is a random question, but in something I read a distinction was made between "closed-suction drainage" and "suction drainage"...does anyone know what they difference is?

A closed suction drain is a circuit with tubing internally connected to an external collection device, such as a bulb. A Jackson-Pratt drain is an example.

There are drains placed to gravity (such as a Penrose) which drain externally, usually onto gauze dressing. More commonly used in veterinary medicine, ano-rectal and sometimes, neck cases.

Finally, there are drains which require mechanical action such as a pump to remove the excess fluid. A wound vac dressing would be an example of this and what some people (not most surgeons, however) would refer to as a simple suction drain.
