I keep seeing the advice to apply "early" but when are you no longer early?

No one's got a concrete answer.

I'll go with submitting your primary in late August/early September starts moving you away from the "early" category.

Some people will reply with earlier and later dates. You'll see.

I agree. My college career services department concurs.

Perhaps 'early' can be considered before interviews start rolling in for people.

I agree. My career center had me freaked out that I had to like submit on June 1st - but the fact of the matter is you don't. Most secondaries aren't released until late July/early August anyway, and most interview invites don't go out until late August for late September at the earliest.

(NOTE I DO SAY MOST YES SOME SCHOOLS ARE A LITTLE EARLIER/LATER)

So basically if you get it in by mid-August; and then submit all secondaries within a week of receiving them - you'll be right up there with the people who submitted June 1st.

The problem is, let's say you submit mid-August and it takes a month to verify, then you're sitting at mid sept. even if you get secondaries done nearly immediately, you'll be deep in oct before you're complete at most schools, never mind the fact that if you're applying as a junior, you're in school and doing secondaries at the same time. Maybe you will get interviews in oct/nov, which isn't that late, but still, at some schools you might well not be selected until later and be interviewing for waitlist spots. I don't think there's a huge diff between submitting AMCAS 6/5 and 7/5, but there's a big difference between submitting 7/5 and 8/5 IMO at least.

According to my adviser,
for AMCAS, Early-Mid june is early, late june is average, and anything after 7/4 is approaching late
For secondaries, submitting after August 15th, and completing after labor day is pretty late.

A lot of that depends on verification time but if you want to be conservative that's not a bad guideline. My brother applied late (submitted primary 8/31) and ended up getting about 12 interviews anyways (3.8/35) so its not necessarily that detrimental if your stats are solid.

Your advisor is hardcore.

ekk, i have a few more that i put off doing because of being burnt out etc...seriously though..is submitting secondaries in Aug LATE? 😱

Your advisor is hardcore.

yeah he is, he said I was pretty late when I sent in a form for the release of my committee letter to Virtual Eval on 7/31.

Well, the way I see it is that if people on SDN are thinking he's a little hardcore then perhaps he should re-evaluate his calendar. Seriously though, if we all followed his system we'd be kicking ass. What's the med school acceptance rate up there at BC? Like, 99%?

it doesnt really matter when you get your AMCAS in... it's the secondaries that count, but I guess amcas is the thing you really dont have too much control in (along with secondaries becoming processed -> complete)

anyways i think that being complete at a school by august is early. sept. average... after that you're getting late.

Why would you be applying as a junior? 😕

I guess I'm used to the quarter system where classes are over 6/20, and you could potentially have submitted AMCAS before that. I guess it's terminology, but basically I'm saying if you have school after the summer and don't submit before august or so, you'll have school and secondaries at the same time.

Unfortunately not everyone at my school follow the suggested calender that he sends out. I for one will not be finishing till september, although its mostly my reach schools that are left. To his credit, he finished my committee letter on 7/20th or so, and I know a lot of comittees out there are still writing.

I don't know how to analyze our admission rates, here's the stats

the raw rate for 06 (junior) applicants was 76%, 59% for 06 Alumi
39% for dental, and 100% vet, opt, PA

Average matriculant GPA was 3.59/BCMP 3.50, so lower than the national average, which is a good thing.

applicants with 3.2+ gpa and 9+ MCAT had 82% chance of acceptance

I wish I had your advisor. I submitted my AMCAS mid August, took the August MCAT, and didn't finish my secondaries until late October. My advisor didn't warn me at all about how disadvantaged I had become. I would've just waited for the next year if I had known.

my undergrad doesnt even start sending out its committee letters until 8/14 (yes, this past tuesday...) and it doesn't seem as if people there are really having a problem getting into top med schools.

our head premed advisor said submitting in June and July for AMCAS is "early-average," and with the turnaround date of the MCAT scoring coming out a month earlier than before, even the August MCAT won't be a huge problem.

Everyone on SDN needs to calm down a little. I know that interview invites are already trickling in at some schools, but the vast majority of them have been pretty silent. Get your secondaries in ASAP after you get them. Stop fretting guys, it's only mid-August!

Thank you for that starlight. SDN has me completely on edge. I'm hoping to be complete at all my schools the end of the month, beginning of Sept. and from the way these guys were talking I'd be late. I wish I could get a life or something.😱

My committee doesn't send letters until 8/14 also. It's still a pain in the @$$ since I submitted my first secondaries in June. To date, I'm only complete at 4 schools.

judging from your username, we are using the same committee 😉

So if I submit my primary by early September, there's basically no chance right? i.e. if I have 3.8, 32S, it wouldn't be good enough? Thanks.

After next week, it should be considered late

Your stats are ok but that is really late to be applying IMO. Not sure if verification time is better in Sept, if so, maybe you'd have a shot, try it and find out, I guess.

just added U of Pitt to my AMCAS.....Thats a little late, I wonder if they are still giving out auto invites.
