I'm going to have to take this course this fall. What was your experiences like with this course? With labs and lectures. The course sounds boring to me; unfortunately, it's required for my major.

i have to take it this fall too, i've been leaving it for my senior year and now it's here🙁 (but that means i'm a senior😱)

I too was required to take this course for my major. i was miserable!!!!!! i did ecology over a summer a semester and it was the most boring bio class i have taken, if not the most boring in general.
There's a lot of memorizing about different ecologists theories and experimental techniques/outcomes and analyzing graphs... i didn't learn too much in this class, but i was not too interested to take it all in. perhaps if your prof is interesting the class will go smoother. my prof just read verbatim off her pp slides the whole time.
sorry to shoot it down before you get to it, but i'm just being honest here.

That's a bummer. I might hold it off for my senior year like the other poster did.

Pure memorization.

Ironically, I don't remember anything from that class because it was really boring. If you want to learn about plants and animals, you'll have fun. If not, invest in a portable gaming device and play that in class. You can also bring your laptop and play games on that. Or your can bring you pillow and sleep....Hell, you probably don't need to go to class at all. If you can memorize things, you can easily get an A.

I hated eco.. one of the worse classes I had to take.. so I dont recommend eco to anyone, well except eco majors lol

Bad for the most part except for the overnight trips which were kind of sweet but sucked because they were on the weekend

well, i think any class where the prof just reads off the powerpoint is gonna be boring, regardless of the subject (referring to what lizz wrote).

i personally thought ecology was easy, and some parts were interesting (although i HATED plant biology). i even took a 2nd ecology course about population biology (upper level) which definitely helped with boosting the science GPA.

but i mean, if it's a requirement, then there isn't really a point in persuading/dissauding you from taking the course. soooo... good luck!

Just like many other classes in undergrad it depends on the the level of interest you have in the course as well as the professor. Mine was not only completely yawn-inspiring, but also gave in depth essay tests... one of three C's in ugrad. If you have multiple options for professors talk to students that have taken the course before or look the profs up on www.ratemyprofessor.com

one of my only B's in my major. I was really excited to take it and all b/c it seemed so different and i thought I would be like broadening my horizons or s/t, but the lectures were incredibly boring and the professor kinda grossed me out hed bring in like (live - in plastic boxes! spiders and other really scary creatures, and then there were slimy ones too like slugs, to illustrate points. and hed pass htem around hte rm and wed all have to pass on the boxes. EWWW still gives me the chils just thinkin abt it. and the reason I got a B was b/c class participation was 5% (i got a 0 there fer sure), and because I didnt "participate" enough in our lab group project (by participate he meant like feeding and cleaning the animal), even though I WAS THE ONE who wrote our freakin 12 page lab report. anyway im sorry u gotta take it. hope its better @ ur college than mine..

HORRIBLY BORING CLASS- AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

i took this course because i thought it was going to be one of those ridiculously easy classes, but ironically it was one of my only B's. Ecology Lab is even worse, maybe it was just my professor but I absolutely hated it.

I've also heard it's rather boring..I'm thinking unfortunately my evolution class is going to be similar...

I looked up at ratemyprofessors.ca and apparently the professor is brutal. :scared: Grrr. I guess I am just going to have to take it in my senior year when I will have transferred to another university, and hopefully a better professor will teach the course.

this is probably one of the most boring things i had to endure as an undergrad.

I've never taken it, but a few of my friends have and they all wanted to scale walls from boredom.

absolutely hated it! The tests were hard and the lab sucked!

One word, USELESS. I loved my evolutionary course.

Do not like ecology one bit. My least favorite of all biology course.

It's where you finally learn that ALGore is a hoaxist. Worth all the remaining boredom for that one revelation alone.

where you see that BS circle of life of a lake diagram.

u know the one with the fungus eating dead logs on a lake, and hten the lake becomes infested with algae and the fish all die, and then it becomes a swamp, and then hard land. that diagram pisses me off.

lol I guess i wasn't the only one who thought this course was boring. I expected every gunner on SDN to be very excited about any course.

who says we are gunners? hahaha i got a B- in the class as a frosh.

We have a lot of gunners on SDN, along with numerous snipers.

i consider myself more analogous to that bastard on HALO jumping everywhere fragging everyone and killing people with that super sword from behind.

then you must be HOT

and prolly responsible for global warming, damn!

you mark off plots and then you count seeds or seedlings or bugs. and then you probably have to write a term paper.

boring.

Personally, I enjoyed ecology because I was about sick of another class telling me "So K-ras is upregulated by NTRADD in the setting of acute hypoxemia which results in cleavage of Capspase N19..."

It's nothing I'd do with my life. but we had a cool professor, some of the models of how natural systems interact are quite neat, and we went on cool field trips.

For my major I had to take a combined Population Genetics/Ecology course. The population genetics part was really interesting, ecology...not so much. Not hard, just boring. If your course is paired with genetics, there is hope...
