its not bad. Each intern cap at 7 and each team cap at 14. If the teams are overloaded, they open up MD service to take on the lame cases. There is also a lot of fellowships (GI, Cards, neph, Geri also i think Pul/crit is coming soon) They also have a small amount of residents, each year has 10 interns so there are not a lot of competition for fellowship. Program director is great, very supportive of residents. There are UCLA, USC med students that rotate through each month. 100% board passing rate and basically guarantee job placement within Kaiser. If you really want to know the details, rotate through and see if you like it or not

I'm on a med-surg unit at Kaiser LAMC. The IM people look pretty content with where they're at -- they don't look overstressed or tired. They actually look pretty content!

kaiser la has "protected sleep time" for every night you're on call. you basically get to turn off your pager and sleep for 5-6 hours each call night. their cap of 7 per intern is awesome compared to most other programs, where the average intern cap is 12. the senior class gets a paid vacation to hawaii together. they also have a good number of their own fellowships, including cards, gi, pulm, allergy, etc. very nice program if you're looking for something cushy and in sunny california.

are all the other kaiser programs the same way? Im considering santa clara-- just curious🙂

I'm from the South Bay...my chair has told me a lot of good things about Kaiser, and that it would be a good fit for me if I just want to do primary care.

Any thoughts on Kaiser Santa Clara?

Well, not just primary care, but also subspecialities. For example, we have 2 GI fellowship, 3 nephrology spot and 3 cardiology spots. Not a lot of people know this, but they tend to take fellows from within the program. Our Cardiology program is especially well known since it is the regional referral center for all Kaiser in southern California. Our interventional cardiology program (3 spots each year)is very well know down in the S. California. As for primary care, we have a huge patient population who actually have insurance so you rarely have to deal with "dispo" issues related to insurance. Our grads find no problem finding a job in Southern Calif. Many of them actually decided to stay within the program. I can't really comment on Northern Cali. kaiser, but i do know they have almost no fellowship up North. The best way to find out if you like the place or not is actually go there and do a rotation to see if you like the place, that would be my advise. Good luck! Yes, I am a resident at kaiser.

Are the Kaiser programs DO friendly?

I am thinking about going to Western COM in Socal, and I was wondering if Western students had difficulties in getting residencies in the Kaiser programs?

... well, we have no DOs for at least the past 4-5 years at Kaiser LA and we matched 100% at least for the past 3 years.
