I am currently a sophomore and have a 3.05 gpa. I would really like to go into medicine, and would love to be a DO. I was hoping that I could pull that GPA up (this semester is looking pretty good), and get into one of the newer DO schools, or one with a lower average GPA like Pikeville. Do you think I have a shot?

It's early ... just try to get the best grades you can, make up anything C- or lower, shadow, build up some nice ECs, take an MCAT prep course, do well, get some good LORs, and you'll be good!!

You have a great potential to boost your GPA if you do well from here on out. Its definitely not abysmal.

Hey eklip53, you have more than a feasible shot at getting into medical school, as long as you keep working at it. You're GPA isn't that bad, and you have a year and a half to bring it up before you start applying. I would suggest start studying for the MCATs as soon as you are able and try to do your best on that. Make sure to get involved in the medical field somehow, such as research, volunteering, or shadowing (Schools are very big on seeing you shadow, especially if you are able to shadow a DO). Also, try to get in good with professors in your school so that they will write you amazing letters of recommendation. One thing I noticed in all my interviews were that the interviewers liked the numbers I had, but they all seemed more impressed with the LORs that I had. A good LOR can make a huge difference when applying. Also, if possible, join a club at school or do something that makes you stand out. I joined the South Asian Student Alliance (SASA) at my college, which was odd because I am white. However,at my NSU-COM interview, one of the interviewers asked me about it and was impressed by the fact that I joined something that someone like me would not necessarily join. Most importantly, don't stress yourself out about getting into medical school; if you really want to get in, you're going to push yourself until you get in, no matter how long it takes.

P.S. One more piece of advice. APPLY EARLY. The earlier you apply, the better your chances of getting into a school, especially the school you want to go to. And another thing, don't listen to everyone on SDN (Especially the allopathic kids that hate DOs). Best of luck.

I did alot of volunteer time working with the disabled. I worked with therapists at a therapudic riding barn. I have a substantial amount of volunteer experience here ~50 hours. Is this close enough to medical experience that it would help me out? I plan to volunteer at a hospital, so either way, I should be ok.

Sorry about all this, but I am full of questions... one last thing... I took honors Physics in highschool, but have not done any in college yet. I will be taking physics 1 and 2 in my junior year. Do you think it would be a good idea for me to take my MCATS this august if I study over the summer. I figured if I did this and it turned out I couldnt handle the physical science section I would be able to take them next year.

College physics is quite different from highschool physics...I don't know if you'd be able to do the physical sciences section with only your highschool class as a basis for knowledge. Why are you in such a rush? You've got a lot of time, and it's better to take things slower and make sure that you do the best you can. Don't worry so much! 🙂

youll be fine as long as you pull up your gpa. I applied with a 3.05 and have 1 acceptance already and a bunch of interviews. Granted I did pretty decent on the MCAT, but the point is as long as you keep goin up and do decent on the MCAT, you'll be fine. Also, do some volunteer work in clinics/hospitals, if you can..
