Hi, you guys, I took the MCAT this april for the first time and I just got the score and it's 32M(ps:14,verbal:6,bs:12). I know this score seem really unbalanced. But English is not my native language and I 've only stayed in US for about 1 year and 3 months(residence time).

I finished a foreign college with an Engineering Major. So far, I have one year pre-med courses in US including all the requirements fulfilled(44 credits for 3.85 including: Elements calculus AB, Physics AB with labs, Biology AB with labs, General Chemistry AB with labs and a CRC award, Organic Chemistry AB with labs, English 105&106). Also, I have volunteered in a local hospital as a EEG trainee and have been trained by a radiologist as a Ultrasound Tech for one year. Besides, I have some clinical research experience back to my college(foreign BS degree with a 3.81 gpa) and now I joined the pre-health application process. 4 recommendation letter will come from my US teachers(Physics, Chemistry, Calculus, Biology). And I will about to get two additional good recommendation letter from the affiliate hospital of the medical school I am gonna apply. Btw, my status is permanent resident.

What is my chance?

Sorry for the lots of questions above and good luck to you guys. I am now online waiting🙂

your chances for what? getting in period. or getting in to a top 5 school?

you will get into med school.
a good medical school too.
a 32 is a perfectly respectable score (unless things have changed in the past 4 years)
but it will also depend on the repuation of the undergraduate school where you are taking these premed classes.

you have a perfectly good reason for not fairing well on the verbal section.
you also have demonstrated dedication with your EC's, and your intelligence with your grades and your other two scores. your writing score isnt the best though.

The only thing that will screw you over is if you cant SPEAK english well at your interview. I feel like these days attendings really like students who can communicate with patients... so I think that as long as you are well spoken, you'll be fine and in the end you'll be a doctor.

good luck!

Honestly, I think that your chances are pretty fair with your current score, but I would definitely retake the mcat this August and do nothing but study for verbal between here and now. The verbal is the most heavily weighted section of the mcat, and a 6 isn't so great. If you can get it up to a 10 you're going to be in great shape for just about any school; retaking that beast could really open some doors for you.

Actually, I am not worrying about retaking since retaking the MCAT may lower my score. Besides, my spoken english is really good(told by my prehealth adviser). I will apply now, thank you guy so much.

Best wishes.

try to keep the pre-allo threads in the pre-allo forum.

So is your BS degree from an american university? because I think that's a requirement for most medical schools. I think your gpa and overall mcat score is great but a 6 V will kill your chances at a lot of schools automatically. The fact that English is not your native language means that adcoms will look heavily on your verbal/communication abilities and a 6V is poor. I am saying this because I too am an ESL and got a 6 V the first time around w/ a slightly lower sci and same gpa as yours but decided to take it again and pulled it up to a 10 and I am currently attending a medical school in US. Take the MCAT again and just try to pull Verbal from 6 to 8 or so and you will be in great shape at a lot of schools and don't worry about your science the second time around.

That's exactly what I was coming in here to say 😉

Since this same post is in the *official* what are my chances thread in pre-allo, I'm going to close this one.
