One word: Wheater's

Cool Cd included that allows you to test yourself.

Plus real purty pictures.

I'm visual and prefer an atlas with not too much text. That being said, I liked di Fiore's atlas. These are illustrations not micrographs but they're very good.
 
If you need it for med school histo class, Wheater's is phenomenal. Just sold mine. Too bad.
 
Ross, Romrell, Kaye- Histology (also has an additional little atlas type book to supplement the text). I really hated histology but I found these books to be helpful. But I don't have much experience with the other books mentioned. Ask the kids in the year ahead of you what they used. I think the book most usefull will vary from school to school. This was the one recommended for us.
