i often hear ppl saying they used the line method to solve cdp's tfe portion. anyone care to explain?

thanks
steven

i hear it's a waste of time. just assemble a 3D interpretation of the figure in your head and do a quick process of elimination. you should expect to spend 10-12 minutes on that section. the line method doesn't work on everything...now if you're on expert on TFE...

i think when i first began TFE, i wasn't getting more than 7 out of 15. now im getting between 10-12 out of 15. so i say the best way to go about it is practice...you'll find something that works.

anyway, im not sure if youve been practicing...but do you have any suggestions on the hole punching section? that one is killing me...

totally agree - the line counting only works on really simple geometric figures. My first dat i relied on the line counting only to be horribly shocked and awed. haha
try visualization as amped suggested

thanks, i getcha...but could you explain what the line method actually is?

the reason is, ive been solving tfe a certain way, and i want to make sure that i havent been using the line method b/c i heard it doesnt work on the actual dat. not having any clue what this method is, i dont actually know if im using the correct tactics

as for hole punching, it's really hard at first to maintain all those holes in your memory, but with practice you get better and much faster at it. you can do alot of process of elimination, and on problems where you really just cant think, just jot down the holes on a 4x4 grid (you'll have time during the dat tutorial to prepare some of these grids)

basically its looking at the perspective they give, for example, a front view. Now with the front view, instead of visualizing and understanding the image they are trying to convey, you just count the number of vertical lines in the figure. ie if its a square split down the middle vertically, then you know there are 3 lines in the top view. so you look at the answer choices, and see which has the 3 lines and thats your answer - if it were only that simple. It may eliminate 1 answer, but don't rely on it to give you THE answer.

did that make sense? ha

that makes sense, thanks man...crap, that's the method i have been using...i took the dat once already and got a 19, maybe that's part of the reason, i cant really remember which parts i had trouble with

i actually think the line method works great. i feel that by checking the lines from each view you could usually narrow down the choices to two choices. i used that method and did extremely well on the PAT

I'm not saying it doesn't work, but in my version there were many that didn't. Of the 15 TFE i say 11 or 12 couldnt rely on line counting only.

so...im still a bit confused on the method...i had thought the way to solve TFE was to eliminate answer choices one by one, and to do that you have to look at which particular shapes occur from different views and then see which lines would correspond to that, and eliminate the choices that dont correspond to that

if that is indeed using the wrong method, and i'm not supposed to use it, then what am i supposed to use. im really supposed to visualize the entire thing from the 2 views given?
