Have heard that some anesthesiologists these days work locum tenens positions only and may only work 6 months out of a year for example...is this common? is it possible to live a lifestyle like this (i.e. only working some months of the year)? is this something thats only happeining these days bc there are a lot of positions available or has it always been the case in anesthesia?.... i have a lot of ties to europe and could imagine spending part of my year abroad and part in the states working to make money and a flexible lifestyle like this would be perfect for me....

You can theoretically make lots of cash in a small amount of time as a locums anesthesiologist.

Locums has its own seperate issues such as making sure you have an assignment (generally not a problem) assignments are plentiful, credentialing you have to get recredentialed everywhere you go and that could start to become tiresome, and walking into a different OR every few months can be stressful if you dont have the right personality. ( I like it). Other than that the cash is great. The reason that locums have become more popular is because groups dont want to pay people what they deserve so people locum.. You can make 500K as a locum full time if you take a fair amount of call. thats with like 5 weeks vacation tops.

There are 2 types of locum assignments. Those where you get dumped on. Every challenging case goes to you because nobody wants to do it. They view you as hey we are paying him an arm and a leg, let him take the risk and the other type of locum assignment is when they all think you are imcompetent because you are a locum so they give you the easiest cases imaginable. Thats fine with me.

👍 Very appealing

Just wondering... where do those figures come from? I've only seen what gaswork.com has to offer as far as locum goes, and it seems to be more in the $200-$300k range.
