I have heard a couple of my friends who have met with the dean of admissions at the medical school they were applying to. They had bad statistics, so I guess they needed some extra way to get their face in. Is there any real point to doing this, what is there to accomplish? Could it hurt you more than help you?

The deans are all smart enough to know why people are meeting with them. At best, you could impress upon a dean that their school is your first choice.

They also could be looking for advice on how to better their application. Many pre-meds are clueless to the process or get wrong ideas cemented in their head about the best way to get into medical school. A meeting with the dean can help clear up some of the confusion about the process.

I think most of the time the meeting doesn't hurt or help, though obviously you don't want to make yourself look like a fool.

I met with two deans. Was accepted right away at one school and waitlisted at another. I think it helped me get my name out there, because the first school where i was accepted at is notorious for waitlisting almost everyone, and i didnt have to go through that.

Did you meet with him before or after your interview?

Ask questions about the process. For example, does the school care for letters of interest or intent. Best way to get off the waitlist. What the school looks for so you can focus your secondary replies towards that.

I think just having the dean know your name will be good. So when he/she looks at all the apps... he/she might give you a little more attention since they sort of "know" you already.

At the beginning of the process I thought it wouldn't be too beneficial to meet with any adcom person. But as the process goes on you get questions that you would rather have an adcom member answer versus random pre-meds on SDN.

So they did this before the interview season? I agree that they might be seeking help if this is at their home school's med school. However, many people interview with the Deans/Directors of admissions. I probably did so at a quarter of my interviews.

Before you even apply, i doubt anyone will let you meet after you already submit an application.

This is correct. The dean cannot meet with you once you have an open file, so if you wish to meet with him/her, you should do it some time in the year before you apply.

im meeting with the dean of my first choice of medical school in a few weeks per advice of a surgeon I have been shadowing. She told me to ask him exactly what i need to do to get into his medical school. besides the incredible information you will get, it will get your name in there. I was also advised to meet with some adcoms from that school. Same purposes

It might also be a good idea for schools where you know the dean is a relatively stable & considerate person...and your interviewer turned out not to be. I had one interview with a particularly snooty a-hole and I wish in retrospect that I had done or said something about it...

One of the class president's at the dental school stressed to me that make sure you call the dean about every two weeks with some sort of question. This way he knows who you are. The thing is I don't have any questions... LOL

Any suggestions????

I just baked some cookies; when would it be convenient for me to deliver some to your office?

be careful.. people might take you literally and have a truckload of cookies delivered to every school's admissions department on the eastern seaboard.

I think that was probably the hope...
