Why can't we used SDN for case presentations and input from our peers? Otherwise what are we here to discuss? Or is the purpose of SDN simply a place to bicker and discuss endo in Japan and crazy hair styles?

SDN should be a resource that allows us to discuss patient's cases. This will allow us to learn though other dental student's issues.

I realize that SDN is not a place for personal diagnosis, but what kind of resource is SDN without actual leaning from peers? By "learning" I mean things that will educate us, not simply spread gossip.

What do you do in class/clinic when you have an problem/case that you can't figure out? You ask a classmate! Discuss the problem and try and figure it out.

Slow down when you close posts that may allow all of us to gain something thing from it.

I agree 100%.

I think one reason ppl aren't allowed to post personal cases is to avoid a lawsuit to SDN. We are a lawsuit-happy society, and noone wants to see that.

You make a valid point however, unless a student places personal information about the patient there is no violation of privacy laws. If I were to state the patients info (age, sex, health, ect) and say some radiographs, it would be considered legal and standard practice in medicine and dentistry. How often do you get case presentations in class?

The only valid reason for closing down a thread would be if a student has violated HIPPA laws.

Dentaltown has already cornered that niche in the market. Without someone in charge who has a real vision like Farran did for DT, I don't see anything changing around here.

Farran did a great job with DT. I think it would be great for SDN to turn into the "student DT"

The points that have been raised here are valid, but will have trouble coming to fruition until there are enough people to clamor for change. More often than not, people are not open to change, which is why certain issues (problems) are raised on SDN repeatedly.

Theoretically, SDN could do much more than it does now, but there are limits to what one internet resource can provide. Increasingly, it is probably best that DT keep its niche because what works on DT might not necessarily work the same here on SDN.

Kudos for bringing this issue up. Dentistry as a whole needs some visionary thinking from time to time.

I am all up for change. I love DT because of the case presentations. I like to go through, print them off, show them to the local dentists, fellow students, and see what they/I would of done the same/differently. That would be great to have that here. It is crazy how soon some of these threads are closed down. I totally agree with shutting a thread down that is giving medical advice to a potential patient, but I think we should be allowed to discuss cases about a third party that is not involved in the website as long as all HIPPA laws are being followed.

That's the rule of thumb we typically apply. Professional interaction, especially between the different healthcare fields, is something SDN puts a high priority on. The earlier thread was mistakenly closed due to a miscommunication between site staff. Sorry for the confusion.
