What is the typical length of a neurosurgical residency?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It differs by program. Some programs are six years, some programs are seven years. Some programs include a research year. Other programs might require a prelim/trans year before starting the actual neurosurg residency. Also keep in mind neurosurg fellowships which tack on a year or two.

Hmm... how bout we just generalize and say "the rest of your life"?

Honestly, It it worth it? You won't be an attending until almost 40. Thats if you attend medical school straight from college...

Does this vary by program? I'm hearing 7-10 years...

Do you have a girlfriend? If so, say goodbye to her. If you do not have a girlfriend, then hopefully you will never know what you have lost. Everything.

4 years of med, 7 years of neurosurgery. If your interested in that type of thing then its worth it. Not to mention 550k average salary isn't to bad.

I think actually if I graduate college at 22 graduate med at 26, I'll be 33 when I'm a neurosurgeon. ( However I don't think I actually want to do a 7 year hell.)

I'm glad neurosurgery is really competitive, IMO its a lot better to get stuck matching/scrambling for IM or FM then have the chance to get stuck with a 7 year residency 😱

I'm very interested in the specialty, though. $500,000 per annum isn't that appealing to me when I consider that fact that I'm giving up so much of my golden years to pursue an intense medical specialty.

I personally know a neurosurgeon who had the same girlfriend throughout his entire med + residency. It IS doable, but don't kid yourself, it is consistently stressful work.

You have to be OK with 80 hour weeks for the rest of your life. Some are, some aren't.

Not really.

22 entering medical school.
26 entering residency.
33 finishing neurosurgery residency. (7 years)

Totally worth it for me. But my personality and interests cater to such a job.

Hmm..considering I just turn 21 before I enter medical school, i can be a neurosurgeon at 31! (graduation before birthday) Think of the years saved!

Time-wise there are worse specialties than neurosurgery. I don't know if you guys consider fellowship as a residency, but if fellowship is included, invasive cards can be as long as 8 years.

The residency may be 7 years long, but hey, at least you could do this:

I thought medicine is a life learning process. 7 years post med school seem to me like a short training period compared to 30+ years you'd be practicing.
