Okay, so I went on an interview about a month ago with a dean who is an orthodonist. He told me to NOT become an orthodontist. I live in NY, and he reiterated that orthodonists are making no money now because people can't afford to give their children braces.

He showed me proof that an orthodonist was emailing the school to get a job as a dental school professor while I was actually interviewing with him.

So, what's everyone's thoughts on those claims?

I always wanted to be an orthodontist to deal with children, but now I am considering becoming a pedio.

A lot of GP's are also doing ortho work themselves instead of referring out.
You'll find better answers in the Dental forum.
I especially recommend sifting through the posts made by "charlestweed." I believe both he and his wife are orthodontists.

For what it's worth the orthodontist I work for is making bank.

That said, he's the top guy in the area so I really can't speak for everyone else

These are actually very different fields, though they both happen to work with children. Hopefully once in dental school you will figure out which one suites you better and go for that... the job and money will come with time.

In this economy; a lot of specialists are not doing well.

However, if you are an established specialist you are doing very well

Do it only because you love that field; if you love pros do that; if u love ortho then do that....money will follow...problem is that most want money now hence; they are struggling.

My orthodontist that I shadowed makes about 600-700k in gross total per year, even in a competitive market such as So Cal. He is a UCLA alumnus with a mind of a Wharton grad. To be honest, I am not really a spender so as long as I make a decent living, I'm happy. I don't need a big hose or expensive car ( although a kitchen equipped with Vikings is a must 😀). I just wish I make enough money to be able to travel to different places around the world ( yes, world traveling is on my bucket list)
P.S I'm getting addicted to SDN🙁

Eh, I've met two orthodontists and they both made absurd incomes. Not all the GDs seem to be doing well, hit-or-miss really, but I've never heard of an orthodontist who wasn't well off.

Plus compared to all the other areas of dentistry, the job seemed so.... clean.

The first step is admitting you have a problem. I admit it openly. I have a paper due Monday and every time I finish a page I check back on sdn. It's more productive than playing video games or using facebook. I deactivated my facebook in the beginning of the semester. if I had facebook and sdn, my grades would be horrendous lol

hahaha! When I worked as a dental assistant, the orthodontist there was terrified of blood. You just reminded me of her. The dental hygenist's work freaked her out.

And thanks everyone for your imput!

Orthodontist make bank. All them kids need braces n all... They be getting rich. Work part time and make dinero....$$$$$

I think orthodontists are becoming oversaturated in some areas. They also have to pay another couple hundred grand for ortho school. Aside from those two factors, ortho sounds great.

Agreed, NYC and other big cities are oversaturated, go become an ortho in the midwest, you'll make a killing
