obviously v=ir, and I = 6 amps. But the answer 2 amps, because they combine the two resistors. It didn't ask for a current through a equivalent resistor. Not sure if I am missing something here. Am I right or is the book right?
 
Correct me if I am wrong, but current in a series circuit is constant throughout where the sum of the voltages is zero. Meaning the current through the 2ohm and 4ohm resistors will be 2amps. For circuits in parallel, the current going into any node will sum to zero.

I think they called it Kirchofs rules?

think of it this way: the current (c/s) is the flow of electrons, and in a series circuit electrons only have one path to travel. Thus, the current traveling through every resistor will be the same (so, to find the current, you must find the equivalent resistor by adding up all of the resistors that are in series).

in series circuits: same I but different V drop across each resistor
in parallel circuits: different I (because electrons preferentially chose path of least resistance) but same voltage on resistors
