think of it this way: the current (c/s) is the flow of electrons, and in a series circuit electrons only have one path to travel. Thus, the current traveling through every resistor will be the same (so, to find the current, you must find the equivalent resistor by adding up all of the resistors that are in series).
in series circuits: same I but different V drop across each resistor
in parallel circuits: different I (because electrons preferentially chose path of least resistance) but same voltage on resistors
