A distribution is skewed to the right if the right side of the histogram extends much farther out than the left side.

So I think I'm right😕

dang it..I should create a new poll...one that says 4.0 (freshmen) (4.0 soph) (4.0 junior) (4.0 senior+) (3.9 freshmen) (3.9 soph)..e.t.c...so if you're a sophomore and a have a 3.9, we'd know...

dude come on, asagacious hinted very nicely yesterday that you might be overdoing it. show some respect, if people think it's an interesting topic, they'll bump it themselves (protip: when you're doing over half of the bumping for your own thread, this is probably not the case).

I agree this thread is very silly. GPA is wildly unstandardized among schools. If anything, sGPA might be a better poll.
 
You are getting more votes though! Soon you might have a large enough sample that is representative of the population.

Representative only of the SDN population and sadly limited because these GPA's represent 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, or 4+ years of college completed and thus cannot be directly compared.

You could just subdivide the poll by year, if that many options is even possible for a poll.

No that's true but I'm just pointing out that this poll will never achieve a representative sample that no matter how many responses it gets.

Perhaps I should be more specific. The sample could feasibly be representative but what we will have measured will not be entirely useful as it will represent freshman, juniors, seniors, sophomores, grad students, etc. It's like trying to find the average height of an SDN user but making no distinction between men, women, 8 year olds, 12 year olds, 17 year olds, etc. Sure we'd get an "average" or some sort of distribution, but what does that distribution tell us? If the average height came out to be 4 feet, would that mean that most of us on SDN are very short? Or could it instead just mean that most of us are pretty young and thus haven't reached full height yet? There would be so many confounding variables that we haven't left enough answer options to untangle them so we would never be able to determine whether SDNers are young or midgets or perhaps gigantic 4 year olds.
 
haven't even started freshman year but due to summer classes it's about a 3.7 😀
 
The best advice I got before starting college was to push myself and get the highest GPA I could for my first semester, as it's surprising how little your GPA may change from one semester to the next.

~80 credits in... and my gpa is about .01 lower than my first semester GPA. I know it's mainly psychological, but try to give yourself the highest starting point you can and you'll have a lot more confidence as you progress.

While I agree with you mostly... it's harder to maintain a 4.0 than it is to show a steep upward trend.

Example of my cousin in Canada:
(not too sure about the fresh and soph GPAs, but they were super low)
Freshman - Sub 3.0
Sophomore - 3.0 something I think
Junior - 3.9 +
Senior - 4.0

MCAT was a 32... got accepted to two schools in Ontario (arguably one of the hardest places with the stiffest competition to get in)

One of the schools I applied to has a GPA cut off of 3.75 in your two best years... aka my cousins junior and senior years. And an 11 in VR... if you don't have those stats... you're NOT considered for an interview.
 
4.0, terrified of MCAT though, but I'm pretty proud of my EC's thus far.

I'm going to do that in a couple of week once you guys are done with your complaining about this thread. I don't know about you guys but I find this information very informative. It's one thing comparing yourself to people on SDN and another comparing yourself with the rest of the US population. Yes, SDN is skewed, but HOW skewed are we really? You're right, a more accurate reading (as I stated a few posts above), is to do a breakdown of what year you're in instead of not knowing.

I've been meaning to give this lecture for some time, and I figure this is as good a spot as any to share:

One should consider the consequence of a question/action/fact before wasting time on it. For example if I were to ask for the average GPA at a series of schools, the consequence would be that I would choose which schools to apply to based on the response (to give myself the best odds). Similarly I might ask for a realistic pre-req timeline for most students, the consequence being that I schedule my curriculum accordingly (so I don't spread myself too thin). Conversely, a question such as 'what is the average SDN GPA' is utterly inconsequential because it won't shape your actions in any way whatsoever. Regardless of the outcome of the poll your goal was (and will be) to achieve the highest possible GPA. See the difference?

Again, this is not informative in the least. If you are looking to see where you stand as an applicant the AAMC publishes free data (which, may I add, is far more detailed) based on GPA, MCAT, ethnicity, residence, etc. Additionally you could browse MDApps profiles to see the outcomes of applicants similar to yourself. A generic poll asking for one's GPA (regardless of what year) provides no meaningful information.

I doubt we're as skewed in gpa as much as we are in pure ego and neuroticism.

Are bans permanent on SDN or are you unbanned after x amount of time? I'm asking since the OP got banned.

yes sir. seen every season except this one cuz i haven't found time to watch the show. i think its better though. they always end on **** cliffhanger after each episode. its better that way so i don't have to be antsy all week before the next show lol.
