For those of us SDN'ers applying now, what kind of specialty are you thinking of pursuing in medical school?

I am thinking about doing Internal Medicine then maybe doing cardiology.

I can't decide for the life of me, so it's good I have more than three years to think about it 🙂 Could be FM...or pediatrics...or infectious disease or gastroenterology...or maybe pediatric gastroenterology!

Oh gosh, I have so many interests. Em, im, neonatology, neurology, anasthesiology (though probably not, I don't want to be bored for the rest of my life - the schedule and pay would just be nice). But who knows, I'll probably change my mind several time before I settle on something.

i'd like to conect things i love the most art/architecture and medicine so i will be shooting for plastic/reconstructive surgery as undoable as it may be.
I belive if you really want something you have to go and get it.
First though i need to get in to med school lol

haha -- whatever i'm reading about, shadowing, volunteering, or working in at the moment. i used to be able to swear by peds but i've recently been thrown back in the ED and realize i'd forgotten how much i love the crazy people and the excitement of trauma

i like your thinking 👍

exactly the opposite with me...
i like to take things rather slow and have time to thik before i do something. I hate stressful environment and the rush.
Plus i really don't want ppl to die on me...
i was always hunging in between art/architecture and medicine. If i was taking science classes i was missing the creativity of art/arch stuff. When i was in arch school i was missing indipendence and objectivity of science classes...i figured that being in a subjective field like art/arch when no matter what you do it's still subject to diaproval, is not my vison for next few decades.
this is my philosophy:
if i can put together medicine, urge for helping others and my artistic talents together then i guess i am a happy person already and i will love my job=i am going to be pretty damn good in it= i will be able to make others happy=i will be even more happy

my interest for the week is em then pediem subspecialty. or just peds =)

very fickly subject for most, i assume

RURAL family medicine, preferably REALLY rural. 😀

I'm gonna wait till after my rotations to make that decision.

Specialties I would consider:
Neurosurgery
Radiology
Plastic Surgery
Interventional Cardiology
Radiation Oncology
Hematology/Oncology
Invasive Cardiology
Pain Management
Urology
Pathology
Pediatric Cardiology
Non-invasive cardiology
Gastroenterology
Otorhinolaryngology
Ophthalmology
Medical Oncology
Dermatology
Anesthesiology
Peds Anesthesiology
Pediatric Critical Care
Neonatal Medicine
Emergency Medicine

I won't know what I want to do for certain until I get into my rotations, but those are the things that interest me and pay a decent salary.

I am in the same boat...ENT isn't bad for that either..do facial plastics stuff. I like working with my hands in general though. Less talky more worky for me....

yeah i only wish i could listen to my Ipod while doing surgery....hard to do art without some music😀

That's why you'll find CD players in most OR's.

yeah but i wonder if you are acctually going to be able to use them lol
As a student or resident? Probably not. As an attending, it's pretty much your show, you get to pick the soundtrack.

OMG....
i hope the anesthesiologist i will work with is going to like TOOL and a perfect circle:laugh:

 Who said the anesthesiologist gets any say?

The circulating nurse is usually the one that picks the music!!
You can keep asking him/her to go change it though...

Obviously I am interested in orthopedic surgery right now, but its a competitive and looong residency so we'll see if I feel that way when it is time to decide!

In case you haven't heard me quote this 100 times before, keep in mind everyone that over 75% of people who have their minds pretty set on something when they start med school change their decision when it comes time to apply for residency. 😀
Let's just deal with getting started, first!! :luck:

Anesthesiology for the moment, but who knows?

In terms of music -- as long as the surgeon doesn't want to listen to "Part of Me" over and over, I'd be fine with Tool and APC. Here's hoping the next APC album is like the first and not the second.

"part of me" is my least fav LOL
i agree as to APC
i like other music too lol and i am pretty flexible.
We can make a deal😉

man i look at all these ppl going nuts over their MCAT scores and it freaks me out....this is gonna be me next year:scared: :scared:

"Part of Me" is EVERYONE's least favorite... why they play it at shows I'll never understand. Did you like the new CD? It was ... standard. Not bad, not fantastic... just... standard. I tell my friends it's Tool Cumulative... perhaps they've hit their musical peak, as sad as that is to say. If they can get really fired up about something -- like Green Day did with "American Idiot" -- they'd potentially up the notch a bit.

Anyway, I'll freak out about MCATs next year. I have enough to freak out about right now.

for some reason, whenever I see your SDN nick, I think of Harry Potter:laugh:

Makes sense to me! 👍

Daniel Radcliffe is going to be, what, in his 30's by the 7th film. I guess that doesn't matter since high schoolers in film are often played by people in their mid 20's.

haha, so true. I saw a film the other day ( i forget which one) , but it was painfully obvious that the "high schooler" was in his late 30s. lol, it was awful.

20-year-olds play high schoolers
30-year-olds play college kids

and films depicting life in college often demonstrate that the writers have never gone to one.

pediatrics!! girls love guys who play with little boys!!.....oh wait...terrible way to state that. Still want to go into pediatrics though

Not a bad choice seeing as male peds are more heavily recruited since the field (seems to be) dominated by females.

I hear all types of specialty any reason why nobody here is choosing OB-GYN?

Just a thought....

I don't yet know just what I want to do for sure, but I can say that I don't want to do peds or OB/GYN because I have 3 kids and one on the way. I love my kids, but like to be able to come home and not have interacted with other kids all day. That way I am able to just goof off. Also, one pregnant woman is enough for me. 😀

Yeah I wanna do OB/GYN.. Hell Nooooo I dont!!!!!!!!!!

Iwant to do FP even though I know that my mind could change easily while I apply to Residency........🙄

Have you ever delivered a baby? It's not a pleasant event (I've delivered four as an EMT).

Peds or Pulmonology...either one..but i know people change their mind all the time during med school, and i have a feeling i may change my mind too 🙂

Wow. None of these have anything in common! 😛

Most people change their minds several times while in school. I changed at least 4 times. In fact, I only know of one person who matched into the field that they had said all along they wanted to do. Everyone was at least a little different...some VERY different.

The biggest change I have seen is switching from ER to something else. People learn quickly thats its not what they thought it would be.

I'm in love with Peds😍 but also hope to do alot with public health and people in urban, underseved communities.

JPH, why do you say that most people change their mind about ER? What makes the preception different from the reality?

I really have no clue want I want to do. I was thinking Sports Medicine, but I heard that's really hard to get into, and I was also interested in EM.😕

Anybody take this test:www.med-ed.virginia.edu/specialties/

It is supposed to help identify what specialty to choose. Although I'm probably going to do internal medicine, internal medicine ranked 29th on the list for me and then i want to do cardiology, cardiology ranked next to last on the list for me while gastroenterology ranked 1st and neurology ranked last. Go figure.

Their malpractice insurance is some places is out of friggin control. No one really wants to do high risk births anymore

can someone tell me how many questions are on the COMLEX, if they are multiple choice, what is considered a passing grade, and scores that are adequate for certain specialties such as dermatology, neurology, pathology, radiology, etc..
