but protein synthesis occurs in ribosomes that are lined alongside the rough ER no?

ribosomes are embedded in the endoplasmic recticulum, thus rough texture give it the name rough ER. I won't claimed to know the exact answer to your question but we all know ribosome is involved in the protein synthesis. Thus YES. And what I have given you is a text book definition of Rough ER.

the RER is an assembly line....it produces proteins for exocytosis....(for release to the outside of the cell)....so imagine a assembly line....thats all...and it goes through the Golgi apparatus (the packing center...think of it has a UPS/FedEx)....done and done

Well, the protein sysnthesis is done in RER but at ribosome (not in ribosome). There was a question like that in one of the practice test, if it says, where do the protein sysnthesis occurs at? Then its ribosome, but if it says, where do protein synthesis occurs in, then its in RER.

Anyways, RER also produces extra memberane, if the cell membrane needs it. It RER membrane also produces pre-hormones, which are then transported into the ER lumen, where they become pro-hormones, then they are sent off to the UPS to be become the final product (hormones)!!

Hope I didnt confuse you!
