Finishing up the first semester of my sophomore year, next semester is where i hit the real meat( chem, physics, calc) and already im having trouble focusing and studying as long as i usually do. Maybe its just the holidays coming up but it feels like i have seniorities and i still have 6 years to go.. So how do you guys buckle down and focus? what motivates you? Do you focus on the end(graduating Pharm school and getting licensed) or do you just live exam to exam?

1,000 posts on SDN definitely does NOT help me focus! BLAMMO!

In all seriousness, you have to focus on the task at hand and make sure you finish it. Every time you drop a class, it's on your record. That one easy course you just don't feel motivated to get an A in, you're going to regret.

It's also nice to step back every now and then and evaluate where you are, what you've done, and what you can do to make your application stronger.

Good luck and knuckle down.

agree with pharm B, task by task is the best. it's too agonizing staring at the end when it's years away.🙁

When you get into pharmacy school, I'm sure you will definitely get a second wind. I feel like I am definitely having these seniority issues myself, but you got to just keep on truckin' 🙂

1) The competition. From academics to even getting into pharmacy related volunteer work, its so competitive now. I Attended Nova's Open house last month and I'd say 45% of the attendies were high schoolers and sophmores competing with you for space. Wish I was so focused on what I wanted to do with my life back then. I've got to do my best to stand out from the crowd with what I've got so far.

Study with a reliable, competitive group thats goal oriented like you.

2) I'm getting to old for this. At this point/stage/age in my life I should be already at "Y" and not "X". No more time to waste.

3) Gonna make mad cheddar when I done. 3-4 more years, and thats it. I'll be self sustaining afterwards.

It is overwhelming to think about how much years you have left to go. An 'A' Test 1, then in Test 2, then in Test 3 etc..leads to an "A" in the class. Corny as it sounds, you win the 'war' one battle at a time. But keep in mind what you need to do/prepare for the next couple of steps (eg remembering stuff for the PCATs).

Make every credit count. Getting a 3.8 in 22 credits this semester is only bringing my subpar GPA up by .2 points. That's what happens when you don't focus on school and accumulate 88 credits of averageness. Ugh, I really need a time machine to smack my young stupid self around to focus.

Money and future lifestyle.

I have no more mulligans to use. I screwed up enough my first two years and its been balls to the wall since then.

It also helps I can't imagine doing anything else with my life.

I'm posting on SDN when I really should be studying. You don't have to focus all the time but you do need to put in the time when you need it. I'll make up this time on the weekend.

For me, I really like getting high scores on exams. I can't do that if I slack off too much. Been there, done that. Now I like to show what I can do.

I take breaks every 15 minutes to scour the various forums I belong to for 5 minutes or so. Helps keep my mind from cracking lol

I think that if you are pursuing the right career path for you, your motivation will come second nature. If you are having a hard time getting into your class material it may be that this is not the right carrer for you. Don't get me wrong... I don't want to discourage you, but you don't want to find yourself years down the line realizing that Pharmacy is not what gets you excited...

Everytime i stray away, i keep telling myself that whatever i do/decide on now, and how much effort i put in it is going to determine the rest of my life. it helps to exaggerate the impact of your actions sometimes but don't do it too much as it may end up hurting you instead.

mindset when trying to get into pharm school: my current major has no future for me

mindset after getting in: have in the back of my mind somewhere how bad i wanted this and reassure myself that if i can live through 3 years of undergrad, i can live through pharmacy school as well. other than that i think about short term (ie. how I can get to the holiday break)

Usually to relax, I double check the grammar and spelling of my forum posts. You should try it sometime; it's very therapeutic.

You could've used a comma just fine there instead of the way over-used semicolon!

Goddamnit, don't troll me when I'm trolling other people. :meanie:

By the way, since I haven't visited the Pre-Pharm section in quite some time, how's your application process going?

Great, thanks! I interviewed w/ UoP on the 30th of Oct and just got my acceptance letter this week, I was thrilled to say the least. But I am holding my breath on my wife's law acceptances, since it still could pan out that I'm packing my bags and moving back east and giving my seat up to someone else. yes, I will be making that decision ASAP, so don't bother haranguing me about it 😛

Haven't heard from USC yet, and no one's heard from UCSF yet, so they're just kind of on the back burner, and I am seriously regretting not having applied to anywhere in Massachusetts or Connecticut.

Life's good as a P1 I take it?

It's definitely a culture shock from undergrad, I'll say that much. Congratulations on your acceptance. If you end up on the east coast, let me know and I'll make a trip out. What schools over on my coast are you considering?

UConn, the MCPHS schools and Touro-NY!

I was just out in Connecticut two weeks ago for APhA-MRM. Good times had by all.

If you're going to apply to a NY school, I would highly suggest either UB or Albany over Touro. Actually, I would more than anything suggest staying the hell out of New York at all costs (it really sucks, man), but if you insist, then refer to the previous advice.

OMG!!!! I didn't know you were already accepted!!!! CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😍
If you give up your seat and move east will you have to reapply to pharmacy school again???? I hope she gets into Stanford Law soon! I will keep my fingers crossed for you! :xf:

And let me know if you get into UCSF! Good luck! 🙂

Well, I would only go to an N.Y. school if my wife got into Columbia or New York U, so it would be mostly out of my control, and I will take your advice into consideration for sure. I have good stats and excellent ECs so I'm not worried about getting in anywhere, although USC not sending me anything recently is bothering me.

Thanks! I didn't make a new thread or anything, I just posted on the UoP thread and changed my sig - Didn't think it needed a big production.

If we have to move back East, I am faced with a choice. Either we do the long-distance thing for 3ish years and then I move back east (Because it's really hard to get your bar certification for a state that you did not graduate law school in apparently) and get a job, or I re-apply next cycle for east coast schools.

I'm definitely waiting with bated breath for UCSF...

The only good school in NY is Columbia...too bad it doesn't have a pharmacy school. NYC is a gorgeous city though...you have to admit! 😉

Yeah, she is right the law school you graduate from is pretty much where you will be practicing at. Its hard to change states.
The question is will you be okay with moving??? CA is a hard state to leave! 🙁

Is it really too late to apply to the schools on that other coast? Some of those deadlines haven't passed yet. You have good stats. I'm sure you can apply near the end of the cycle and still be fine.

I'd take Toronto over NYC any day of the week. Live in upstate NY for a few years, then tell me how much you love NYC. Oh, upstate NY isn't pretty or lively enough for you? Yeah, that's because the rest of the state is broke because ****loads of tax money gets funneled to the city. However, if you think an endless money pit that manages to leave the entire rest of a state in economic hardship is gorgeous, then I guess I can't change your mind.

Family keeps me sane. Looking forward to the money isn't that bad either. It's like when people buy a lottery ticket, they just want to dream.

Thinking about the $10,000 a month I'm going to make and how much vodka it'll buy keeps me focused.

Thoughts of getting paid six digits is enough motivation for me. Never settle for bronze!

So futuristic.

The Wal-Mart School of Pharmacy (you know it's coming)
Class of '09 (2309)

Thank God someone got that reference, I was afraid I was gonna have to explain what a Ferengi was lol

I guess you could say Star Trek helps me stay focused. I do homework sometimes with re-runs of TNG on in the background.

I've been trying to convince the wife to buy me the entire DS9 series for X-mas, but no dice yet 🙁

I haven't watched TNG in a while... still bitter they killed off Data

It's just interesting to watch the dynamics of the show. I mean, promotion must be a PITA in the Federation. Most of the characters have had the same rank for God only knows how long.

And when does the crew get to see their families? I mean O'Brien marries Keiko, so he gets to have a wife onboard. Does the average crewman get the same privilege? And when does this evolve into a Macross situation with so many civilians running around all willy-nilly?

Yeah, it's the end of the semester. 😀
