What kind of certification do I need to get a job as a pharm tech?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know a lot of pre-pharm students work as pharm techs. What kind of education/certification do I need to do this? How long does it take to get certified?

CPhT = Certified Pharmacy Technician

Depending on your state - you will either need to be certified before you being work as a technician - or after one year of working in the field.

There is no time requirement (may vary by state) for most states - you simply sign up for the test, and if you pass it you are certified.

The test covers basic level knowledge a pharmacy tech should have. Drug names (brand/generic), insurance, law, and pharmacy calculations, drug formulations.

I agree with aboveliquidice, it depends on the state you live. If you live in Colorado like I do or other states that do not regulate its pharmacy technicians, I would highly recommend not to take the PTCB until you get a job. The reason for that is I already spent $925 for the class and exam and can't even find a job. I either might be too qualified or don't fit in the company's schedule. Once you get a job, especially retail, the company will reimburse your exam fees.

Hope this helps and don't forget to check my blogs if you need some help on the PTCB...
