I am a medical student with a 254 on step I, AOA, Honors in most courses and rotations, and a few publications. I have NO idea what I should go into, here is some criteria:

- I want a great lifestyle
- I like surgery, but HATE optho and ENT
- I am basically open to anything but primary care

Any suggestions?

I think you should work 7 days a week for free, with call Q2, at a Welfare Eye & Ear Clinic.

ok, so if you want to convince us that this is anything other than a not so subtle brag topic... (ask yourself if you could have made the thread by just saying "I should be competitive for most fields")

Why don't you tell us a little more about what you do enjoy and find interesting in medicine instead of what you don't want to do.

On the other hand... it does sound like you should take a good look at ortho.

You know if IR would have enough hands on for you? Derm and do Mohs?

I'm in a similar situation to you except I'm at the beginning of my 3rd year. Really unsure of what I want to do but I want to have a decent lifestyle with at least a fair pay for the work I will do

Definitely Psych.
👍👍

Seriously though, what third year rotations did you enjoy?
This is how you should make your decision.
Make the residency and specialty fit YOU.

Sure, since YOU asked...

- How about doing a month on a community medicine rotation and going to the free clinics to adjust your perspective a little....
- You can have great lifestyles doing just about anything, it's all in perspective...a golf greenskeeper can have a great life if they manage their money...hell, a firefighter and teacher I know of are halfway to retirement with around half a mill banked, two great kids and lovin' every minute of it....
- You really come across very cocky and that will bite you during intern year.....there's always someone over you who knows more and can set you up for failure.....put that stuff in the locker and leave it there....

I don't know what kind of fellowship do you want to do?

Why are people so alergic to primary care? Is it a IgE type rxn or a mad cow rxn? Maybe I have to go back and study more to figure it out.

If you are basically a happy person you will be happy doing about 5 different specialties. If you are an unhappy person, then you will be unhappy till you see a therapist. Think in broader terms about what you like, and do not like. I like my patients to be awake. That rules out anaesthesia, most fields of surgery, and pathology. I like a lot of variety. I would not like to look at skin all day for 40 years. I like kids. That rules out internal medicine. What does that leave? Peds, psych, family medicine, ER, pediatric neurology, and PM & R. Any of those would have made me happy. Some people like to work with their hands. Surgery, family medicine, OB-GYN. Some people like to know a subject in great depth. Then you want to be a subspecialist. But remember ... there are 5 specialties that will make you happy

Douchemanologist.

This is what I was thinking, but couldn't figure out exactly how to word the specialty...but it definitely appears to apply.

The classic case of "I scored well enough to do anything (congrats), but am very likely to choose something for the wrong reasons".

And then, in 20 years, will be crying "medicine isn't worth it....it sucks, I should have been a lawyer, banker, etc..".

Sorry if the truth (as it appears) hurts.

I agree that the OP is a douche. That said, I don't think lifestyle and compensation are necessarily the wrong reasons to choose something. I mean, if you have the ability to do whatever you want, why wouldn't you choose something which will allow you to make the most money with the least time commitments? That's provided that you are reasonably interested in the subject matter and the work. It's just common sense. Medicine has got to be one of the only fields where people actually discourage you from considering the financial and lifestyle considerations involved in your career choice.

The wildcard is that you may choose something for compensation now and end up disappointed and bitter in 10 years when our reimbursement has been restructured and you are making as much as a family practitioner.

Could very well likely be the case with all this mid-level encroachment. The OP is a certified douche that is probably disliked by everyone he/she is around, but is smart for choosing surgery as a specialty, a field that is immune to mid-level encroachment.

i'm kinda curious too about this too

250 Step I, average GPA, only pass in all rotations, not AOA, no research, socially awkward, patients do like me for some reason 😳

i dont like to think too hard
i freak out very easily
i dont like talking to pts that much
i dont like working up pts
i would like to be a consultant 🙂

Medicine was an interesting career choice for you...

Anesthesia.

i'm just a little adhd, ocpd, and gad...not dumb just easily bored and scatter brain. will probably not like anesthesia. preventive medicine sounds good although I really hate doing physical exam the most, eek, would really like to do procedures

So let me get this straight:
You don't like to think.
You don't like talking to patients.
You don't like examining patients.
You don't like working up patients.
You freak out very easily.
You want to be a consultant.
You want to do procedures.

Honestly, there isn't much left. Path maybe? Radiology? Too much thinking. Surgery? You'll freak out. Anything else? You'll have to talk to patients, examine them, and work them up on a regular basis. I've got it: Rad Onc or Derm

Cosmetology? I hear AVEDA is accepting...

any specialty out there that rely heavily on midlevels and the attending just sign papers?

It's funny how you guys feed a troll. The OP just made this account, has no credibility, and is asking a stupid question. How about not responding so op wont be tempted to ask something like this for 'fun' again.

Hi, what kind of doctor would one be if she/he wants to study medicine and find cure for diseases especially Cancer? Can you give me a terminology?
Sorry for stupid question, I'm not in medical field at all but this is important in the book that I am writing. Thanks.

lol, i wish i was trolling. I'm just tired of the daily mind numbing stuff that I have to put up with all day, ie, notes, presentations, listening to endless ***** that the patients talk about, reading charts, blah blah blah. I still care about the patient but I didnt anticipate having to work so damn hard😡

Yeah, medicine would be great if it weren't for the patients.

the OR is worthless is a third year. i don't gain anything from standing around watching over your shoulder and occasionally cutting a suture. an occasional pimp question or explanation isn't worth the 90% of downtime that the OR has when you are an "observer"

i'd rather be reading a book so i could be learning something
