How can I find out what kind of LOR's each medical school wants? After reading though some posts it seems like different schools want different ones. Is there a website or book that has all the different schools requirements for LOR?

In general, if your school has a pre-medical advisory committee, you need a letter from them. If not, most schools usually ask for 2 or 3 academic letters, and often one of those must from a prof in your major. All schools that I applied to have given me the option to submit additional letters, such as from a work supervisor or a doctor I shadowed.

Many medical school websites discuss the rec letter requirements on their admissions pages, but not all. It's tedious to look up each one - if there is a book or consolidated website I'd be interested!

The most important point about recommendation letters: you need to get to know your profs well enough for them to write you a GOOD letter. A letter that says "XXX came to my class everyday, and got an A" doesn't say much more than your transcript already shows.

Good luck!

What if your school has a pre-med committee but you get letters of rec from 3 professors you worked with instead of the committee letter?

Yeah, thats a good question. Do we have an option to get a letter from the committee or is it mandatory, if we have one at our school?

If you're still in school, medical schools EXPECT to receive your committee letter. If you don't provide one, and your school has a committee, the med school will want an explanation for that (i.e. it might be an issue.)

Different undergrad schools do their letters different ways. For example, some write a cover letter and then staple a few letters to that cover letter. Others write a composite of rec's they receive from the profs and just send one long letter (maybe with quotes?) My advice is to find out how your school's committee letter works, and see if you can pick certain profs to write letters on your behalf for the committee.

a good number to have...and this has worked for all 43 schools i have applied to.

3 science LORs from Professors
1 humanities LOR from Professor
1 or more LORs from ECs like volunteering or research

for schools that want less than that then you just pick the ones they want and send.

if you have a committee you better send a committee letter. why go through the hassle of explaining?

43!? That's a lot. Care to enlighten me on which ones?
I'm so worried about not getting in that I feel like I should apply to all 110+... 🙁
