That is a usual problem. Sometimes I like listening to soft Piano pieces, Other times I listen to opera,..Mozart,..Beethoven,..Rock,..Waltz👍...etc.
But I cant decide what is the best for studying & focusing..
What do you think???

I usually listen to something ambient so that it's there but not too distracting. Techno usually works for me. I also like older Pink Floyd stuff. Radiohead's new album is also great.

Listening to good music when studying is the only way I stay (relatively) sane.

I listen to Air's "Lost in Kyoto" over and over. It drives my boyfriend crazy, which has a bonus effect of him leaving and not bothering me. :meanie:

I can't usually listen to music while I study, but i take frequent breaks--always listen to music then. Right now it's been mostly Oh Sleeper, norma jean, and nodes of ranvier

Sigur Ros, Kid Loco, Broken Social Scene, Radiohead, Thievery corp, Air, The Field, LCD soundsystem, Zero 7, Explosions in the Sky, Califone. That's my studying playlist.

Here is my list. I don't particularly like this service, but it's free (for students and legal, though DRM'd like you won't believe it) - ruckus.com.

The list below is primarily w/o vocals as I find those to be distracting. They are a nice set of instrumental/new age (w/o putting you to sleep) / abstract beats:

Artist: William Orbit
Song: You Know Too Much About Flying Saucers
Album: Hello Waveforms

Artist: Ryan Farish
Song: Chasing the sun
Album: Beautiful

Artist: Robert Fox
Song: Light, Spirit, Power
Album: A gathering of spirits

Artist: ulrich ScHnauss
Song: A strangely isolated place
Album: A strangely isolated place

Artist: E S Posthumus
Song: Nara
Album: Unearthed

Artist: Amethystium
Song: Into the twilight
Album: Evermind

Artist: The starseeds
Song: Behind the sun
Album: Two AD

Artist: Deep Dish
Song: sergio's theme
Album: george is on

My fav right now is Sergio's Theme. I really like Amethystium. Try it out. We should get together a list of songs to listen to while studying for folks who have similar taste.

Pandora is excellent. I also use Nexus radio, a program that allows u to access over a thousand online radio stations for free with all types of music. Classical is generally what i listen to.

Pandora is awesome!

I actually like heavy music when I study... either fast punk or cool guitar stuff like Protest the Hero, All that Remains, SoulFly, AX7, LAGWAGON!, Pennywise

a lot of heavy metal - Soilwork, Metallica, Disturbed, and others, but also a lot of soundtracks, such as Matrix, Matrix Reloaded, Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean, Last of the Mohicans, and then also classical. I've also got techno, hip hop, crunk, and more.

this time of year, it's Trans-Siberian Orchestra 😉

Nothing - by Silence

John Cage - 4'33"

There are many good covers of 4'33" that I like to line up back-to-back. Frank Zappa's version rocks

Alphonse Allais - Funeral March for the Obsequies of a Deaf Man

Erwin Schulhoff - In Futurum

The Best of Marcel Marceau

Enya!! She's a musical genius, the words aren't distracting, and I find her soothing when I start to panic about all the antiarrhythmic drugs I still don't know! Seriously, my first-born child shall be named Enya (sure hope it's a girl...)

Incidentally, our university passes out free redbull when the undergrads have finals...may have over done it a bit! MMMMM! 🙂

Nothing - music distracts me too much (pretty much any sound actually).

Trans music is the best focus music - no words, stron undelying rhythm very long songs.

the best way to get a good selection is starting a "infected mushroom" channel on pandora (which is by the way the best thing on the internet today)

Studying and any kind of distraction is counterproductive. Listen to music when you're working out, driving, or hanging out. Study when you're studying. You'll be done sooner and can then get back to real life.

I disagree. Music stimulates me, and the more stimulated I am, the better I can study.

During the first two years I had to have background noise while studying. Half of that was the random chatter of TV at home the other was a mix of the music at Barnes and Noble and random people chatter (although it did suck to hear about normal people lives while I was studying😡)

For studying, I listen to classical (Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven, the big ones) or post-rock (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Mono, M83, Do Make Say Think, Sigur Ros).

😍

By far the best postrockers around. I wish I caught them in concert before they reformed into Silver Mount Zion, or atleast seen SMZ ;[. Explosions in the sky are good but they are like a diluted and abridged version of GSYBE. Sigur Ros are a whole genre in of themselves.

I listen to rap usually. Kanye and Ludacris got me through finals this year.

Luda used to come out with some pretty decent stuff but he kinda fell off in my opinion. I'm apretty big rap fan but I've found myself listening to less of in recent years.

Something loud to drown out the neighbors.

I get really distracted when I listen to music while I am studying. I feel like I'm the only one with this problem...

Has to be horrible music. That way I don't get distracted and start singing along 🙂

Well if you can do it, thats great. Personally I can't study unless its pretty quiet. I agree with doctor j, I really only listen to music in the car or when I'm surfin' the web.

Beethoven, Miles Davis and Pavarotti!

iTunes goes *off* when it's study time 😉

There is only one song for me. Kanye West's Stronger.

Hardcore studying- nothing. I can't reach peak focus with noise (yes, I love ear plugs!).

Light studying- Afghan, Iranian, Arab, Turkish, instrumental and classical Indian music.

I get around.

Screw classical.

I study with Scarface on constant loop.

"Say hello to my lil friend!"

Hmm. Care to venture a guess. 😀

I vaguely recall a thread similar to this in the clinical years forum.
Well I'll repost this link here anyways.
I like yahoo's internet radio stations and now they dont have commericals in them.

This is mostly downtempo electronica. You just can't go wrong.
