hello,

do pediatrician especially in residency years do a highly invasive procedures like LP and others ?? or is it a job of other team, I mean the anesthetist ??

what kind of procedures do pediatricians do ??

thank you.

You can do a lot of procedures during residency. Just a small sample of ones I remember doing in residency:

lumbar punctures
intubations
arterial sticks/lines
starting IVs
central line placement
cardioversions
umbilical lines
changing tracheostomies
circumcisions

After residency in the office setting, I'd say probably the only ones pediatricians really do are LPs and circumcisions.

Depends on where you are and what pediatric specialty; pediatric critical care physicians do all of the above plus transvenous pacer placements, pericardiocentesis, paracentesis (drainage of abdominal fluid), chest tubes, dialysis catheter placements. The procedures I mentioned are usually at the fellow/attending level with residents observing.

I've done all of these while in the PICU as a 2nd year resident. Granted, the Critical Care attendings and fellows know of my interest in PICU - so they know that I want to do a lot of procedures. But I'm pretty sure that any of the other residents who show an interest in doing procedures would get the same opportunities.

I'd also add I&D's, suturing and splinting to what's already been mentioned.

dont forget to include kissing boo-boos too

oh yes, don't forget pelvic exams. blech. During my three years of peds residency, I did at least 20-30 pelvic exams as part of adolescent and urgent care rotations. and at least three vaginal foreign body removals. double blech.

While all those procedures mentioned can be done by residents, that is highly institution and speciality dependant. The more fellows there are, the less residents get to do.

Furthermore, if you do get to do them, some of them will only be once or twice... not enough for competency.

Impact of fellows is also institution dependent. I definitely have had some fellows push attendings to allow me to do certain procedures or take the lead in certain situations.

Depends on where you work. I'm a general pediatrician but my group covers a level two NICU. I still intubate and throw umbilical lines. Also have had to intubate on the general floor.

But if you're going to be an office doc only and not do hospital work, your procedures will be few and far between.

Oh man I forget how to do those! I took some time off so the last time I did a pelvic exam was over two years ago. At the hospital I go to med school they often got OB GYN consults for the kids who need a pelvic! although it was dependent on the ages as most of the kids I saw who needed them were under 10 or something and were being worked up for some odd things. . I'd think adolescents would probably not get a consult.
