What kind of research counts as clinical experience?

I have read that "clinical research" can go some way towards fulfilling the clinical experience requirements for admissions, but I am unclear as to precisely what qualifies as clinical research. Must it be participation in a clinical trial of some new treatment per se, or is slightly more basic science research focusing on a patient population (and with face-to-face interaction with said patients) considered to be the kind of "clinical research" that counts for clinical experience?

Thought this board was most likely to contain people who have done this kind of thing already in the past...
