Some schools I applied to have additional updates that you can post on their portal. Should I be doing this if I have a new clinical job? For the schools that don't have this area should I update them as well unless they specifically state not to send updates?

News of a new job is worthless. No one cares if you just started something.

Give us a semester of great grades, a major award, or a publication.

For needy schools or those that like seeing applicants grovel, send the update.

Hi Goro, when we write the update letter, is there anything else we need to include such as LOI material (e.g. why we want to attend X school)? The update letter is likely going to be just a few sentence, and I worry if that's too short. Might be me getting desperate w/o an II. Just want to know how to write a good update letter.

Not really a fan of that, especially if it's pre-interview. They know you're interested, and you should have articulated why the school is good for you and your for them in your app already.

Another question regarding updates on grades:

Do we need to include unofficial transcripts of the new grades in our update letter? Or is self-report ok for the purpose of an update?

I ask because my school takes a while to input grades into transcripts.

Self-reporting is fine.

Would added hours + a promotion at a job that I didn't have a chance to discuss in most secondaries (only had it as a gap year plan since I just started the job when I was filling out most secondaries) be worthy of an update?

As of now have about 800 hours in psych clinical research (ties into my motivation for medicine) and have received a promotion. It's industry sponsored research so there is no chance for publication obviously but there is a ton of hands on patient care and interaction with physicians, IRB etc.
