So which of these looks better or which of them do you all think would create a more positive impression assuming one got equal experience from them

1. Volunteer at a hospital with patient interaction
2. Volunteer at a cancer research institute working in a lab

Thanks!

Can't you do both?

Not with my schedule now. The hospital I really want can only give me daytime and I'm in class then.

I want to know if I should go for another hospital that I'm not really interested in or go for the research.

Research opportunities are hard to come by. Personally, I would go with #2.

DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.

Stop worrying about what will look best. If you hate it, but it "looks" better your likely to quit it fast. If your EC's are things that you really enjoyed they will come across that way. Best of luck to you.

BlueElmo, thanks. I also want to do it because it's with a professor I really like.

Spartan, I'm interested in both and that's why they're both options but since I can't do both for now, I want opinions on which would look better (because ultimately, I want med schools to appreciate the experience I get from either). I do however agree with you about doing what I enjoy more.

I would chose #2 if I HAD to... but I would try to find a way to do both.

I have to agree with BlueElmo. It seems like almost every applicant has hospital experience.. I'd do #2. 👍👍👍👍👍

Do you have any previous experience with working in a lab or in a medical setting? If you have in one or the other, you should try something new to broaden your experiences. If you have neither or both, do what interests you more because both sound like great learning opportunities. It seems to me like you're leaning more towards the research...don't volunteer at the other hospital if you're not interested in it. So #2, final answer.

By the time you apply, you should have both of those on your app. If you like research, then do it. But clinical experience is very important, it's almost an unwritten requirement.
