coming from ivy+ schools adds well known faculty LORs and academics all know their peers at top schools (same postdoc at Harvard, grad students together, on panels for each others grants, etc) Most of my interviewers came from ivy+ colleges/T20 med schools themselves so it just keeps perpetuating
