Mayo sounds like its in a different league of medical schools. I've spent time on their web site but couldn't really tell. What philosophy does Mayo have that makes it different from other medical schools? Is it primarily for research-oriented students and physicians?

Thanks!

Well, I have not started there yet but I can tell you some things that IMHO make it unique. Mayo has one of the smallest class sizes for any medical school in the nation at 42 with 2 of those slots for DDS/OMS (oral surgeon dentist), I think 4 M.D/Ph.D slots and the rest for M.D. Early clinical (for real exposure) doing clerkships starting 2nd year, tons of research opportunities, learning from some of the best clinicians in the world, Mayo is ranked as the number 2 hospital in the nation (US News) and possibly one of the best regarded medical facilities in the world, a large faculty to student ratio, some of the highest USMLE board scores, and last but not least medical students at Mayo have the lowest medical debt of any medical school. Tuition is less than a state school and most students get full rides...

Class size is approx 42 with 2 of those slots for DDS/OMS (oral surgeon dentist) and 6 MD/PhD slots (8 this year to make up for less than 6 last year).

Clinical exposure in second year (half days 4-5 days a week w/ rotations thru surgery, medicine, derm, PM&R, Peds and more).

Presence of every specialty in medicine with always multiple practitioners allowing plenty of opportunity to shadow and experience different fields even as an M1/M2.

13 week research block during third year usually leading to a publication.

3rd year elective allowing you to try-out some field you may want to go into early in your career.

FINANCIAL AID - as said above, some of the lowest debt in the country due to some of the highest financial assistance.

Plenty of other things... but Im biased.

Hope this helps.

Hey trouta,

I actually stayed with you last year when I interviewed. I was the one who came for the interview and stayed overnight for the Halloween party. I still remember that crazy second year in that tight leather catwoman costume...purr!

Yeah, just interviewing at Mayo is an accomplishment. Only about ~250 people get on-site interviews, and according to the adminstration, all the people who interviewed the year before I applied eventually got accepted somewhere. The only drawback (or plus depending on your preference) is the town itself--very small and quiet.

Good luck with your boards/third year trouta.
